- 2. Exodus 20:4-6 NIV "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

- I saw a cartoon of a man & his wife leaving church. You could see the sign where it said: "Today's Sermon - The Ten Commandments." The man said: "Well, at least I haven't made any graven images."The command we consider the least relevant is the one that is the most often repeated in the rest of the OT.Our previous lesson considered the "Who" of worship. This lesson considers the "How" of worship.Most people don't think the second command is too important.God is very concerned with the "how" of worship.That is so, because your worship reflects your image of God.

- 1. Not religious art, sculpture, paintings.Many churches refuse to have any religious symbols - even crosses on communion trays. (Dimmitt struggled with this when replacing 20 year old communion set. Didn't want crosses. I showed them the set we were replacing & it had crosses!)God actually commanded images in the OT. There were cherubs on the mercy seat, fruit on the tabernacle & angels in the temple.2. Not the worship of false gods. That was already dealt with in the first commandment.This commandment forbids representations of God.This was the first command Israel broke - before God even had a chance to put it in writing.

- Wouldn't a symbol to remind Israel of the presence of God help focus their minds on worship?The problem is that there is no likeness adequate to represent God.

- They were God's people and they had God's box.In battle, the Philistines killed 4,000.Israel took God's box into battle. Their idea was that God wouldn't let anything happen to his box.The Philistines were terrified at first. But they rallied & whipped Israel. They killed 30,000 & took the box.On that day God showed Israel that they couldn't manipulate him.God honored man by making us in his image. We dishonor God by trying to reduce him to our image.
- The religious world doesn't have golden calves. But it does have institutional religion full of sanctuaries, statues & sacraments designed to reduce God to one place & time.Among us, we still have attitudes contrary to this command.
- 1. People try to make something special of preachers. They try to turn us into priests between man & God. The preacher must be present if we're sick, distressed or troubled, because somehow the preacher is a little closer to God.
