Lesson 7 in a series on the Ten Commandments. This sermon on the sixth commandment was presented August 28, 2011, at Palm Desert Church of Christ, by Dale Wells.
2. Why should we not kill? Because of the Sanctity of Life
3. Genesis 9:1-7 NIV Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. The fear and dread of you will fall upon all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air, upon every creature that moves along the ground, and upon all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hands. Everything that lives and moves will be food for you.
4. Genesis 9:1-7 NIV Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything."But you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it. And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each man, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of his fellow man.
5. Genesis 9:1-7 NIV "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man. As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it."
6. Parameters set by God No eating of meat with its life blood Genesis 9:4 NIV "But you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it. No killing of humans Genesis 9:5-6 NIV And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each man, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of his fellow man. "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man.
7. Set in context of procreation Genesis 9:7 NIV As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it."
8. Why should we not kill? Because of the Sanctity of Life Because of the Sovereignty of God
9. Hebrews 9:27-28 NIV Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.
11. Translations of the Sixth Command Prohibits all killing? Prohibits murder? KJV Thou shalt not kill. ASV Thou shalt not kill. NIV You shall not murder. NET You shall not murder. NKJV You shall not murder. NLT You must not murder. ESV You shall not murder. NASB You shall not murder.
13. Numbers 35:16-21 NIV If a man strikes someone with an iron object so that he dies, he is a murderer; the murderer shall be put to death.Or if anyone has a stone in his hand that could kill, and he strikes someone so that he dies, he is a murderer; the murderer shall be put to death. Or if anyone has a wooden object in his hand that could kill, and he hits someone so that he dies, he is a murderer; the murderer shall be put to death.
14. Numbers 35:16-21 NIV The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death; when he meets him, he shall put him to death. If anyone with malice aforethought shoves another or throws something at him intentionally so that he dies or if in hostility he hits him with his fist so that he dies, that person shall be put to death; he is a murderer. The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death when he meets him.
16. Exodus 21:12-13 NIV Anyone who strikes a man and kills him shall surely be put to death. However, if he does not do it intentionally, but God lets it happen, he is to flee to a place I will designate.
17. Numbers 35:22-25 NIV But if without hostility someone suddenly shoves another or throws something at him unintentionally or, without seeing him, drops a stone on him that could kill him, and he dies, then since he was not his enemy and he did not intend to harm him, the assembly must judge between him and the avenger of blood according to these regulations.
18. Numbers 35:22-25 NIV The assembly must protect the one accused of murder from the avenger of blood and send him back to the city of refuge to which he fled. He must stay there until the death of the high priest, who was anointed with the holy oil.
21. Exodus 22:2-3 NIV If a thief is caught breaking in and is struck so that he dies, the defender is not guilty of bloodshed; but if it happens after sunrise, he is guilty of bloodshed. …
23. God does not consider war murder Numbers 31:7-8 NIV They fought against Midian, as the LORD commanded Moses, and killed every man.Among their victims were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba--the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword.
24. Soldiers were not told to leave the army Luke 3:14 NIV Then some soldiers asked him, "And what should we do?" He replied, "Don't extort money and don't accuse people falsely--be content with your pay."
25. The first Gentile convert was a soldier Acts 10:1 NIV At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment.
26. There is a time for war & a time for peace Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 NIV There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: … a time for war and a time for peace.
28. The Bible approves capital punishment OT capital crimes: NT on capital punishment Murder Rape Adultery Kidnapping Blasphemy Violation of the Sabbath Recognizes the right of the state to execute offenders
29. Paul before Festus Acts 25:10-11 NIV Paul answered: "I am now standing before Caesar's court, where I ought to be tried. I have not done any wrong to the Jews, as you yourself know very well. If, however, I am guilty of doing anything deserving death, I do not refuse to die. But if the charges brought against me by these Jews are not true, no one has the right to hand me over to them. I appeal to Caesar!"
30. Jesus before Pilate John 19:10-11 NIV "Do you refuse to speak to me?" Pilate said. "Don't you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?" Jesus answered, "You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin."
31. State has right of capital punishment Romans 13:1-7 NIV Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong.
32. State has right of capital punishment Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience.
33. State has right of capital punishment This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants, who give their full time to governing. Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.
44. What is Forbidden? Murder with express malice Murder with implied malice Anger and hatred
45. Jesus’ application of this command Matthew 5:21-22 NIV You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca, ' is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell.
46. Two Thoughts: Your concern for your fellow-man determines whether you HAVE kept it
47. Two Thoughts: Your concern for your fellow-man determines whether you HAVE kept it Your concept of God determines whether you CAN keep it.
48. The most important death of all time was capital punishment How can you keep from responding to that kind of love?
Notes de l'éditeur
After man's first sin came life's first tragedy - the murder of one man by his brother. There are 15,000 murders per year in our country (down from peak of 25,000 in 1990)Sixth command not hard to understand; why so hard to obey?Exodus 20:13 NIV "You shall not murder. Most of us would judge ourselves innocent. Consider some disturbing questions:Why are we silent when millions of babies are killed each year by abortion? Why are we silent about starving millions worldwide when our bellies are full?Obeying sixth command means more than NOT doing something wrong. It means DOING something about the right to life.
We do not kill because of the sanctity of life.Animals are fair game; why not man?Up to this point, man was a vegetarian. Now he has the right to kill for food. But God set parameters.
Emphasis not "pro-life" but "pro-person".We talk about sanctity of life; Bible talks about sanctity of the person, not all life.Worth of a person is rooted in his relationship to the Creator. If we deny the Creator, then we will place no value on life. Examples:If child female, kill it. The way millions of little girls have been killed through the centuries. If child not beautiful or intelligent enough, kill it. The way to build a master race.If person old, offers nothing to society, kill him. The way some societies have unburdened selves of elderly.Value of a human exists because of relationship to God. No other species bears the image of God. People are sacred.
The judge has the right to set his own docket - to determine when each individual comes into court. We live in a world that says God is dead & wonders why it can't stop the killing.
The Heb verb ratsakh refers to "malicious & unlawful killing". This commandment teaches the sanctity of all human life.
There are three types of homicide in the OT. They are what our law calls:1. Murder with malice aforethought. Most commonly, malice is the specific intent to kill or do great bodily harm.Penal Code 187. (a) Murder is the unlawful killing of a human being, or a fetus, with malice aforethought. …Penal Code 188. Such malice may be express or implied. It is express when there is manifested a deliberate intention unlawfully to take away the life of a fellow creature. It is implied, when no considerable provocation appears, or when the circumstances attending the killing show an abandoned and malignant heart.
2. Manslaughter. This is homicide with no malice involved.PC 192. Manslaughter is the unlawful killing of a human being without malice. It is of three kinds: (a) Voluntary--upon a sudden quarrel or heat of passion. (b) Involuntary--in the commission of an unlawful act, not amounting to felony; or in the commission of a lawful act which might produce death, in an unlawful manner, or without due caution and circumspection. This subdivision shall not apply to acts committed in the driving of a vehicle. (c) Vehicular—The Law of Moses distinguishes between these two kinds of homicide.Only murder comes under the umbrella of the sixth command.Every murder is a homicide, but not every homicide is a murder.
Justifiable homicide. This is homicide that is commanded or authorized by the Law, and hence is not punishable. Examples from Penal Code 197 include self-defense, defense of others, defense against intruders in your home who intend to commit a violent crime, and other similar conduct. There are also examples from the Bible:
Killing in self-defense is justifiable homicide.
This is the killing of a burglar by a resident. The reason for the distinction between day & night is the threat of personal harm. In the daylight, one could see whether the criminal is armed. At night, the threat is greater.Hence, killing in defense of self or others is justifiable in OT. This is not killing in defense of property.By extension, this could be applied to killing by law enforcement officers attempting to prevent crime. (Penal Code 196)
Killing in war is justifiable homicide.
Some think there is an inconsistency in a God who says "Don't kill", then sends Israel to annihilate its enemies. This shows that God makes a distinction & does not consider killing in war a violation of the sixth command.
John the Baptizer didn't tell soldiers to quit their jobs, but to do their jobs right.
Sometimes God uses the armies of one nation to discipline another. The Twelve Tribes were disciplined by the Philistines; The Northern Kingdom (Israel) was disciplined by Assyria; The Southern Kingdom (Judah) was disciplined by Babylon.
Capital punishment is justifiable homicide.
Penal Code 188. Such malice may be express or implied. It is express when there is manifested a deliberate intention unlawfully to take away the life of a fellow creature.Human life bears the image of God & killing is destroying that image. So, it includes:
Murder
Suicide. You have no more right to take your own life than to take someone else's. This is becoming a great concern with the advent of self-injection devices for physician assisted suicide.
Abortion (I don’t want to belabor this) Penal Code 187 (a) Murder is the unlawful killing of a human being, or a fetus, with malice aforethought. PC 187(b) provides exception for certain therapeutic abortions and for abortions performed by a doctor when the mother’s life is threatened by childbirth, and where she consentsMy personal belief is that abortion is allowable if the mother's life is threatened. This would be a justifiable homicide where one life is taken to protect another's. A woman has the same right to protect herself, or a husband his wife, from an intruder within, as from one without.Vast majority of abortions today are by people who want immorality without responsibility. They are murder, because they are committed with the specific intent to kill the fetus.
EuthanasiaNot passive euthanasia. There is no Biblical mandate to keep a body alive when it would die on its own. Hence there is no moral problem with allowing the terminally ill to die.Active euthanasia is forbidden. We have no right to take active steps to end another's life, no matter how painful, nor unproductive.
Penal Code 188. Such malice may be express or implied. … It is implied, when no considerable provocation appears, or when the circumstances attending the killing show an abandoned and malignant heart.I suggest that indifference is also forbidden. The sixth command also judges:
Drug peddlers who have no regard for the lives they destroy.
Slumlords who take chances with peoples' lives by allowing unsafe conditions to exist.
Shady contractors who cut safety corners to make a few bucks.
Indifferent Christians who have no concern for the needy & hungry?Indifference is antithetical to the heart of God.
How many of us would like to go back to court & proclaim our innocence now?
Your concern for your fellow-man determines whether you HAVE kept it. Do you feel concern for your fellow-man?
Your concept of God determines whether you CAN keep it.Laws, guns & jails don't touch the heart.Man's heart will continue its evil ways until it comes to recognize God.As long as man ignores God, the value of life is gone. Medical science is close to being able to say:a. This is the sex, intelligence, physical makeup of your unborn child. Do you want it?b. This is the quality of this aged person's life. Do you want it?Man thought he was so enlightened when he put God to death. Now he can't understand why he can't stop the killing.Prayer: Father, the wickedness of the world is so great, we are amazed that you haven't yet judged mankind. We understand that you are not willing for one soul to be lost, but that you seek repentance. It is easy for us to feel that those with no respect for life are winning. Help us to love life and respect it.
Invitation: The most important death of all time was an example of capital punishment. It was undeserved. Jesus didn't deserve to die.Yet it was deserved. The crimes he bore deserved death. The irony was that the crimes he bore weren't his. They were yours. You deserved to die, not Jesus. He bore the cross so that you could wear a crown. *** How can you keep from responding to that kind of love?
