- After man's first sin came life's first tragedy - the murder of one man by his brother.There are 15,000 murders per year in our country (down from peak of 25,000 in 1990)Sixth command not hard to understand; why so hard to obey?Exodus 20:13 NIV "You shall not murder.Most of us would judge ourselves innocent. Consider some disturbing questions:Why are we silent when millions of babies are killed each year by abortion?Why are we silent about starving millions worldwide when our bellies are full?Obeying sixth command means more than NOT doing something wrong. It means DOING something about the right to life.
- We do not kill because of the sanctity of life.Animals are fair game; why not man?Up to this point, man was a vegetarian. Now he has the right to kill for food. But God set parameters.

- The Heb verb ratsakh refers to "malicious & unlawful killing". This commandment teaches the sanctity of all human life.
- There are three types of homicide in the OT. They are what our law calls:1. Murder with malice aforethought. Most commonly, malice is the specific intent to kill or do great bodily harm.Penal Code 187. (a) Murder is the unlawful killing of a human being, or a fetus, with malice aforethought. …Penal Code 188. Such malice may be express or implied. It is express when there is manifested a deliberate intention unlawfully to take away the life of a fellow creature. It is implied, when no considerable provocation appears, or when the circumstances attending the killing show an abandoned and malignant heart.
- 2. Manslaughter. This is homicide with no malice involved.PC 192. Manslaughter is the unlawful killing of a human being without malice. It is of three kinds: (a) Voluntary--upon a sudden quarrel or heat of passion. (b) Involuntary--in the commission of an unlawful act, not amounting to felony; or in the commission of a lawful act which might produce death, in an unlawful manner, or without due caution and circumspection. This subdivision shall not apply to acts committed in the driving of a vehicle. (c) Vehicular—The Law of Moses distinguishes between these two kinds of homicide.Only murder comes under the umbrella of the sixth command.Every murder is a homicide, but not every homicide is a murder.
- Justifiable homicide. This is homicide that is commanded or authorized by the Law, and hence is not punishable. Examples from Penal Code 197 include self-defense, defense of others, defense against intruders in your home who intend to commit a violent crime, and other similar conduct.There are also examples from the Bible:
- Killing in self-defense is justifiable homicide.
- This is the killing of a burglar by a resident.The reason for the distinction between day & night is the threat of personal harm. In the daylight, one could see whether the criminal is armed. At night, the threat is greater.Hence, killing in defense of self or others is justifiable in OT. This is not killing in defense of property.By extension, this could be applied to killing by law enforcement officers attempting to prevent crime. (Penal Code 196)
- Killing in war is justifiable homicide.
- Some think there is an inconsistency in a God who says "Don't kill", then sends Israel to annihilate its enemies. This shows that God makes a distinction & does not consider killing in war a violation of the sixth command.
- John the Baptizer didn't tell soldiers to quit their jobs, but to do their jobs right.
- Sometimes God uses the armies of one nation to discipline another. The Twelve Tribes were disciplined by the Philistines; The Northern Kingdom (Israel) was disciplined by Assyria; The Southern Kingdom (Judah) was disciplined by Babylon.
- Capital punishment is justifiable homicide.
- Penal Code 188. Such malice may be express or implied. It is express when there is manifested a deliberate intention unlawfully to take away the life of a fellow creature.Human life bears the image of God & killing is destroying that image. So, it includes:
- Murder
- Suicide. You have no more right to take your own life than to take someone else's. This is becoming a great concern with the advent of self-injection devices for physician assisted suicide.
- Abortion (I don’t want to belabor this) Penal Code 187 (a) Murder is the unlawful killing of a human being, or a fetus, with malice aforethought. PC 187(b) provides exception for certain therapeutic abortions and for abortions performed by a doctor when the mother’s life is threatened by childbirth, and where she consentsMy personal belief is that abortion is allowable if the mother's life is threatened. This would be a justifiable homicide where one life is taken to protect another's. A woman has the same right to protect herself, or a husband his wife, from an intruder within, as from one without.Vast majority of abortions today are by people who want immorality without responsibility. They are murder, because they are committed with the specific intent to kill the fetus.
- EuthanasiaNot passive euthanasia. There is no Biblical mandate to keep a body alive when it would die on its own. Hence there is no moral problem with allowing the terminally ill to die.Active euthanasia is forbidden. We have no right to take active steps to end another's life, no matter how painful, nor unproductive.
- Penal Code 188. Such malice may be express or implied. … It is implied, when no considerable provocation appears, or when the circumstances attending the killing show an abandoned and malignant heart.I suggest that indifference is also forbidden.The sixth command also judges:
- Drug peddlers who have no regard for the lives they destroy.
- Slumlords who take chances with peoples' lives by allowing unsafe conditions to exist.
- Shady contractors who cut safety corners to make a few bucks.
- Indifferent Christians who have no concern for the needy & hungry?Indifference is antithetical to the heart of God.
- How many of us would like to go back to court & proclaim our innocence now?
- Your concern for your fellow-man determines whether you HAVE kept it. Do you feel concern for your fellow-man?
- Your concept of God determines whether you CAN keep it.Laws, guns & jails don't touch the heart.Man's heart will continue its evil ways until it comes to recognize God.As long as man ignores God, the value of life is gone. Medical science is close to being able to say:a. This is the sex, intelligence, physical makeup of your unborn child. Do you want it?b. This is the quality of this aged person's life. Do you want it?Man thought he was so enlightened when he put God to death. Now he can't understand why he can't stop the killing.Prayer: Father, the wickedness of the world is so great, we are amazed that you haven't yet judged mankind. We understand that you are not willing for one soul to be lost, but that you seek repentance. It is easy for us to feel that those with no respect for life are winning. Help us to love life and respect it.

The crimes he bore deserved death.The irony was that the crimes he bore weren't his. They were yours.
