Lesson 11 of 26 in a series of New Testament Vistas. This sermon on the Holy Spirit comes from John 13-16. It was presented March 4, 2012, at Palm Desert Church of Christ, by Dale Wells
2. Monotheistic?
Deuteronomy 6:4 Hear, O
Israel: The Lord our God, the
Lord is one.
Isaiah 45:5 I am the Lord,
and there is no other; apart
from me there is no God.
1 Timothy 2:5 For there is
one God …
3. Trinitarian?
Genesis 1:26 “Let us
make man in our image
Matt 28:19 … baptizing
them in the name of the
Father and of the Son
and of the Holy Spirit …
4. John 14:1-3
"Do not let your hearts be
troubled. Trust in God; trust
also in me. In my Father's
house are many rooms; if it
were not so, I would have
told you. I am going there to
prepare a place for you. And
if I go and prepare a place for
you, I will come back and take
you to be with me that you
also may be where I am.
6. John 14:16-17
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you
another Counselor to be with you forever – the
Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him,
because it neither sees him nor knows him. But
you know him, for he lives with you and will be
in you.
12. John 14:25-26
“All this I have spoken while still with you. But
the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father
will send in my name, will teach you all things
and will remind you of everything I have said to
you.
17. John 16:5-15
“Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of
you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ Because I have
said these things, you are filled with grief. But I tell
you the truth: It is for your good that I am going
away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come
to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
18. John 16:5-15
When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in
regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: in
regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; in
regard to righteousness, because I am going to the
Father, where you can see me no longer; and in
regard to judgment, because the prince of this
world now stands condemned.
19. John 16:5-15
“I have much more to say to you, more than you can
now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes,
he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on
his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he
will tell you what is yet to come.
20. John 16:5-15
He will bring glory to me by taking from what is
mine and making it known to you. All that belongs
to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit
will take from what is mine and make it known to
you.
24. How Does He Speak to You?
Counselor
Teach you: Convict you:
• Whisper? • Sin?
Prosecutor
• Shout? • Righteousness?
• Scripture? • Judgment?
Notes de l'éditeur
John 14-17 is called the “Upper Room Discourse”Last time Jesus was alone with his disciples before his death — many topics – things that were most important to him – and them.Four passages Jesus discusses the coming Holy Spirit — look at 3
Shema maintains God is One.Deuteronomy 6:4 Affirmed elsewhere in Bible* Isaiah 45:5 * 1 Timothy 2:5John Wilson (Pepperdine) – Archaelolgical dig at Caesarea Philippi – found cache of Muslim coins inscribed “God does not beget and is not begotten”.Affirmation of one God; attack on doctrine that Jesus is God in the flesh, Only Begotten Son of God.
Attack on another Bible doctrine – Trinity — never found in the Bible. Implicit, not explicit.* Genesis 1:26* Matthew 28:19 God the Father/Son/HS — each person fully God — distinct yet one—antinomy (not paradox) – two statements that are mutually exclusive, but Bible maintains both are true.Faith comes in where human logic fails (Heb. 11:6); where we cannot explain & reconcile two irreconcilable doctrines. Paradox can be reconciled; antinomy cannot.Even though God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit have eternally existed as three distinct persons, there is only one God. The idea of three persons and only one God is difficult to understand completely. Even so, it is one of the most important ideas of the Christian faith. What do we learn about the God the HS from the Upper Room Discourse?
Jesus is going to leave them shortly — 14:1-3Context for 14:16-17
“Counselor” - “Helper,” “Advocate,” “Paraclete” — “Holy Spirit”A friend who argues in your defense in the law courtParaclete, HS, God, is on our side — fight for you in the challenges of life
“Another”While Jesus was on earth, he was advocate/friend for his disciplesH.S. will continue doing the same, but he will be with us forever.Yet, as real as he is to us who are his disciples …
The World is incapable of hearing/recognizing the HS (reread)John 14:17 “…The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.”I cannot convince a non-believer of the reality of the HSNo amount of arguing will help — They wouldn’t get itJohn 3:6 “That which is born of the flesh is flesh …”1 Corinthians 2:14 NIV84 The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.Yet without coming to know the HS — never find forgivenessJohn 3:5 NIV Jesus answered, "Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.
Wonderful promiseJohn 14:17 “… But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.”Active since Genesis 1:2HS is in the midst of the 11 disciplesSome day, he will be “in” all disciples — Acts 2 — “Indwelling”Acts 2:38 NIV84 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Part of the work of the indwelling Spirit is to teach us “all things”When do I learn nuclear fission? Secrets of the universe? (Life on other planets? Other bases for life than carbon based forms? Klingons?)Not quantum physics, but spiritual things concerning loving & obeying GodWhen do I learn Hebrew? When do I learn how to reconcile Monotheism with Trinitarianism?Teach all things is clarified to “remind you of everything I have said to you.”
Sometimes speaks quietly to our mindsWhispers, “Turn off the movie”Don’t say that — critical; judgmental — I don’t care if you think you’re rightQuestion: when he whispers, are you listening? — Are we quick to obey?
Sometimes he shouts and hits us over the head with a 2x4ExampleFebruary 21, 1991 – the day my life fell apart – because I wasn’t listening to the whispering of the HS, he had to hit me in the head with a 2x4 to get my attention.Lost my family, my home, my job, my career, my support group, my future as I knew it.Where could I go but to the Lord.He gave me another family, another career, another support group, another future. What I learned is that I don’t want to get hit with God’s 2x4 ever again.
Other times he speaks through ScriptureAs you read the very words of God, you begin to hear/commune with its author“Illumination” of Scripture2 Timothy 2:7 NIV84 Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this.Specifically for the 11 Disciples — help them remember what Jesus taughtWhy do you believe the gospel writers got it right?Logical arguments: eyewitnessesBut I’m not going to trust my life to logical arguments ≠ faithReliability of Scripture based on Jesus’ promiseWouldn’t convince a non-Christian, but it is all I need
Imagine yourself as a disciple — advantage?HS could not come until the work of the cross was accomplishedTurn a band of frightened men who fled after Jesus’ arrest, to Acts 4:19-20Acts 4:19-20 NIV84 But Peter and John replied, "Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God's sight to obey you rather than God. For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard."
“Convict the world” – Paraclete not just defense attorney, also God’s prosecuting attorney1. Convict the world of its sinGracious showing people that they are not acceptable to GodWhen we do not tell people that apart from Christ they will die in their sins— no favorThe world cannot respond to the gospel – Blinded by their sin of unbeliefNo matter how hard we try, we cannot convict the world of sin“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him” (6:44)It is the HS’s job to tell the world of his presenceHow does the HS do this?Sometimes directly — prick conscience; challenge beliefsPrimarily through disciples as we proclaim the gospel of sin/forgivenessWhile we must say the words, it is not our job to drive it homeFrees you up for evangelismAdmit your sin – For those who are “seeking” God What you are feeling is God’s HS drawing you to himselfQuestion is, will you respond?
2. Convict the world of righteousnessNegative: show world that its righteousness is filthy ragsJesus told them — Now task of HSPositive: show world that righteousness available only through JesusJesus is going to the Father as a victor—accomplished his work on crossNow role of the SpiritHow does the HS do this? Primarily Jesus’ disciples bearing witness (#3 John 15:26-27)John 15:26-27 NIV84 "When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me. And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.B of the ABCs — 2 Cor 5:212 Corinthians 5:21 NIV84 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
3. Convict the world of judgmentNamely, that Satan (and his followers) stands condemnedOn the cross, Satan’s judgment and destiny were finalizedIncluded are his children — those who do not believe in JesusJohn 8:43-44 NIV84 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. How does the HS do this? Primarily though Jesus’ disciples!Fully indwells each believer – empowering us to walk by Spirit Galatians 5:16-23 NIV84 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. … (22) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.The HS works through Jesus’ Spirit-empowered disciplesTeaches us through whispers/2x4/ScriptureAs we share/live the gospel, the HS convicts neighbors/coworkers/family of their sin and their need for Christ’s righteousnessABC
Does he advise you as a counselor? How does he teach you? Whisper? Shout? Scripture?Does he charge you as a prosecutor?Sin? Righteousness? Judgment?
