Unit 4 Lesson 4
Objective: Today our goal is to use multiple properties to solve
equations and solve for missing values using the Distributive and
Commutative Property
Let’s review our vocabulary:

• Variable – A letter or symbol that represents a number
• Term-
• Coefficient
• Constant
• Pattern
• Distributive property
• Commutative property
• Expression
Let’s review the Order of Operations ONE MORE
    TIME!

 Objective: Today our goal is to use multiple properties to solve equations and solve
for missing values using the Distributive and Commutative Property

 Objective: Today our goal is to use multiple properties to solve equations and solve for missing
values using the Distributive and Commutative Property
7(9+2)=63+14 or 7(11)
Is it okay to do this?
     7(9+2)=14+63
                                                                                  Turn and
                                                                                    Talk!

 Objective: Today our goal is to use multiple properties to solve equations and solve for missing
values using the Distributive and Commutative Property
If we get the same answer then it’s totally okay!

It is because of a certain property that
we can move the numbers around
     when multiplying or adding while
using the Distributive Property and it
will still give us the same answer!

 Objective: Today our goal is to use multiple properties to solve equations and solve for missing
values using the Distributive and Commutative Property
Let’s look at another equation! First let’s solve
them then state the property that was used!
     8(3-2)= 24 – 16  Distributive Property
     Answer: 8
                                                       Distributive Property
     8(3-2)= 8(1)
     Answer: 8
                                                       The Distributive Property
     8(3-2)= -16 + 24 including the use of the
                                                        Commutative Property
     Answer: 8
 Objective: Today our goal is to use multiple properties to solve equations and solve for missing
values using the Distributive and Commutative Property
Now you try! Use the commutative property to
write the equation that uses the distributive
     property in a different way!
                7(9 + 4) = 63 + 28
                7(9+4) = 28 + 63

                           8(7-2) = 56 - 16
                           8(7-2)= -16 + 56

                           -4(9+3) = -36 +(-12)
                           -4(9+3)= -12 + (-36)
 Objective: Today our goal is to use multiple properties to solve equations and solve for missing
values using the Distributive and Commutative Property
Are these two equations the same?
               7(5-3)= 35-21 7(5-3)= -21+35

                          14 14

Yes, they are because the commutative property allows you to
multiply or add numbers in any order and get the same answer!
 Objective: Today our goal is to use multiple properties to solve equations and solve for missing
values using the Distributive and Commutative Property
Let’s take it one step further…
a(8+2)= 16 + 4,
What’s the value of a?
          4
a(8+2)= 16 + 4,
Awe that’s easy, it’s… it’s… it’s…
 well that’s some question you
        got there Frank!
a(8+2)= 16 + 4

    What times 8
    will give me +16
    and what times 2
    will give me +4?
                                                                  2
 Objective: Today our goal is to use multiple properties to solve equations and solve for missing
values using the Distributive and Commutative Property
Now you try one!

                                                  j(6+4)=18 + 12

                                                              j=3
 Objective: Today our goal is to use multiple properties to solve equations and solve for missing
values using the Distributive and Commutative Property
Man, now this is critical thinking!
                                                      Distributive Property

                                                   g(3 +4)= 9 +

                                                   g(3a +4)= 9a +
          a=3                                       g(3a +4)= 9a+ b
          b=12                                     3(3a +4)= 9a + 12
 Objective: Today our goal is to use multiple properties to solve equations and solve for missing
values using the Distributive and Commutative Property
Let’s wrap this all up!
You and your partner You and your partner
use a whiteboard to solve for the
write this equation following variables
using the
commutative
property h(2x - 4) = -4h + i
7(3+2)= 21 + 14
That’s all folks!
Now let’s do some
  independent
    practice!
In-Class assignment…
         • Work independently to complete the in-class work
           on Evaluating Expressions
         • Your teacher will monitor your progress while you
           work
         • When you finish, please work on Math
Minutes, Complete corrected homework, or Read
           your choice book
         • Do Not raise your hand. Look at your notes for
help or skip the question and work on a different
question until your teacher comes to your desk.

values using the Distributive and Commutative Property
Exit Ticket

        • What is something that I learned in
today’s lesson that I didn’t know how to
do that I now know how to do?
        • I wonder…

  1. Use the PREMDAS chart to solve this equation… don’t forget that fractions are another form of division!
  2. Have students come up and show their work by writing on the whiteboard
  3. If this picture looks like it’s moving to you, your brain is definitely ready for the next level! LOL
  4. Now put this example on the board - t (2x + 3) = 12x + b (use triangle and box)
