PEC Field Officer, Jeff Werner, has been struggling with how to explain the issues surrounding the proposed Rt. 29 Western Bypass just north of Charlottesville. The trickiest part is describing what's at stake -- real fixes for Rt. 29 that this bypass will all but preclude. - 14. What if we told you that there was a solution?
- 15. A solution that was developed by Albemarle, Charlot esvil e, and VDOT.. together.
- 16. “Places 29”: The Six Fixes
- 17. 1) Improve the stretch between Hydraulic Rd & the 250 Bypass by adding lanes & improving the on ramp
- 18. 2) Complete the Hil sdrive extension to take about 10,000 – 15,000 vehicles off of Rt. 29 between Hydraulic & Rio
- 19. 3) Extend Berkmar Drive with a bridge to take about 20,000 vehicles off 29 between Rio and Airport Rd
- 20. 4) Improve the oh-so-stressful Rio Rd intersection with an overpass to al low traffic to move more easily and efficiently
- 21. 5) And the other crazy intersection @ Hydraulic? Let’s improve it with an overpass as wel l
- 22. 6) Widen the section of Rt. 29 after Hol lymead Town Center to fix the bottle neck, & improve the intersection at Ashwood Blvd
- 23. The Six Fixes = A Rt. 29 that moves.
- 24. This means drivers wil be less stressed -- pedestrians and cyclists wil be safer and less frightened. This means happier people.
- 25. BUT..
- 26. These sustainable solutions are at risk due to The Western Bypass.
- 27. The Western Bypass: (AKA: The Road to Nowhere)The highly ineffective, tiny bypass that wil do nothing to bring sustainable improvements to local traffic on Rt. 29. A wasteful project that VDOT gave an F, and that wil cost approximately $250,000,000 of tax payers’ money, while doing more harm than good to the local community .
- 28. If the Western Bypass is built, almost al l of the six fixes wil not happen. This doesn’t have to be the case.
- 29. There is stil time for you to let our elected officials know that you do not want your money spent on a Road to Nowhere. Speak up. Today.
