3. The male GazeTheory is a very important
theory used in RnB music videos, especially
those of female artists.
Therefore, we looked further into this theory
and found the following…
4. The concept of the gaze is one that deals with
how and audience view the people presented.
For feminists, it can be thought of in the
following three ways:
1. How men look at women
2. How women look at themselves
3. How women look at other women
5. Camera lingers on the curves of the female’s
body
Events which occur to women are presented
largely in the context of a man’s reaction to
these events
Relegates women to the status of objects
The female viewer must experience the
narrative secondarily, by identification with
the male
6. Firstly, we didn’t like the idea of using the Male
Gaze theory throughout the whole music video.
The reason for this is because Beyoncé is known
and has always been portrayed as a strong
woman, even in her more emotional songs.
Therefore, we didn’t feel that it was right for us
to make her seem too objectified in the view of a
male audience.
However, because we still wanted to comply to
the codes and conventions of RnB music videos,
we included it in a small section of our music
video.
7. We used the MaleGaze theory in our music
video in the scene where they first meet. This
is because Hakan’s facial expression conveys
that he likes ‘what’ he sees and he wants
‘what’ he sees, which is why he walks up to
Hilary and stops her.
The fact that when he stops her and she
obeys his order, shows that he is in charge
and his needs must be put before hers.
8. Next, we carefully chose her outfits and did her
make up to follow the idea of the Male Gaze
theory.
The cream dress which we chose for her in one
of the performance scenes is very short and
would be pleasing to the heterosexual male eye.
Furthermore, we used the inspiration of ‘Curley’s
Wife’ in the book ‘Of Mice and Men’ and curled
her hair in the scene where she is not wearing a
short dress and used red lipstick on her.We used
Curley’s wife as an example because her
character also craved male attention.
9. However, because Beyoncé is known as a
strong, powerful and independent character,
we tried to reflect this as much as possible in
the performance scenes.
Also, we tried to highlight this in the narrative
of the dinner scene through making Hakan
propose to Hilary as he kneels down in front
of her.The variation in levels suggest that
Hilary has more control and/or power as she
is higher in terms of level, when compared to
Hakan.
10. Fitting the description of
Curley’sWife.
When Hakan first sees Hilary
When Hakan stops Hilary
Hilary in a short dress
11. Hilary with red lipstick/curly hair
Hakan at a lower level than Hilary
12. We included many close up shots and focused
heavily on the artist (Hilary) in our music
video.
We also have many performance scenes in
our music video where we tried to make her
look as much as Beyoncé as possible.
13. Our music video is a narrative video which is
one of the features of RnB music videos.
It follows the story of how a couple started
their relationship and various points of their
relationship
14. We tried to add brands and labels. This is
mainly a factor which male artists use.
However, we still included these things with
Hakan, as shown below.
