TOP MOBILE & TABLET ACTIVITY – WEEK ENDING 2/22/2013
Mobile Trends (cont.)
With location-based services powered by map data expected to reach 1.4 billion users by 2014
(Gartner), we expect nothing less than increased innovation and competition around mobile mapping.
Below are VentureBeat’s top 5 predictions for 2013 and the digital maps space:
– OpenStreet Map will get better. With its ever-increasing user base, the data can only continue to improve. This is
hugely important for developers seeking to build their own location-based products and services.
– Apple Maps will get better, too. The app suffered from data issues in 2012 and will likely start to rely on integration
from external mapping parties (Apple was rumored to acquire Waze at the end of 2012).
– Google Maps will lose some of its luster. After Google raised the price on its Maps API in 2012, Foursquare began
looking for new options and left Google for OpenStreetMaps. We expect that others might follow in Foursquare’s
footsteps and explore other mapping technologies.
– Partnerships to differentiate. More competition means more mapping services, as well as more originality,
allowing one platform to differentiate itself from the next. Recent examples of those looking to differentiate
include Google Maps who has rolled out 3D functionality, and start-up Nooly, who is allowing real-time weather to
be served by GPS.
– More maps to come. With Amazon’s Maps API going public in 2012, it raises the bar for non-traditional players like
Facebook (especially with the recent Graph Search updates) to make an appearance.
