Remember!
Left to Right, Top to Bottom
• Now, if you're having trouble finding your book on the shelf,
remember this rule for
how the books are shelved:
left-to-right, top-to-bottom
• That means you start at the left on the top shelf
and move to the right
until the shelf ends.
Then, you go to the next shelf
• beneath that and do the same,
left to right, top to bottom
What is a call number?

on the side binding of the book.

Non-fiction
• Non-fiction books are shelved by their subject.
Why? If you were looking for a book on dogs, you
wouldn’t care who the author is, you would just want
to read facts about dogs.
• Non-fiction books are classified using the Dewey
Decimal System.
• Each book has a set of numbers followed by the first
three letters of the author’s last name.
• For example:

523.3
FOW
The Dewey Decimal System
call numbers
• The system was created by Melvin Dewey, a
former librarian.
• A Dewey call number always has three
numbers to the left of the decimal (0001.3)
• To the right of the decimal, there is no limit
to the number (001.325)
• The more numbers you add to the right of the
decimal, the more specific the subject is.
• For example, the Dewey number for the
commercial processing of kidney beans is
664.805652 !!
