2. ‘1 in 5 Britons suffer from some
form of Anxiety disorder’
‘Neoliberalism is creating
loneliness’ George Monbiot
Causes:
- Economic, technological
and ideological change.
- Self-interest and
individualism.
- Consumerism and social
medias.
‘Almost 250,000 children
receive mental health care in
UK Survey on 2,215 people
aged 16-25: Politics and Jobs
swell youth anxiety.
‘Young people's self-confidence
is at its lowest ebb in the eight
years since the research began.’
NSPCC's Childline: ‘struggling
with the demanding modern
world’.
‘Anxiety goes up, the world we
live in is more ‘fierce’. Jean-
Pierre Peter (historian)
Cause: Abundance of
information 24.7, overwhelming
awareness of the world.
Everyone suffers at some point
from ‘normal’ anxiety, however,
for others, it becomes
pathological.

where fear activates and
circulates’ Erik Nortier

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBZyFMd6La4
In order to broaden our knowledge about social anxiety, we researched videos on this topic.
This would allow us to understand the sensitive topic in more detail, we could also take from this video
what kind of interview questions we could ask.
The structure of this video also could influence the way we assemble our own documentary, not in the
sense it is a cartoon but the order they speak about symptoms etc.
Finally, the way they edit in bigger words which could be associated with social anxiety - this would
engage the audience as they will see how serious social anxiety should be taken, it could also give
the audience an insight of how people who suffer from this may feel on a day to day basis - forms a
rapport.

An insight into a paranoid, neurotic man in
the third-person perspective
Paul Trillo The Irrational Fear Of Nothing
● To portray anxiety we could film the signs of
fear (dilated pupils, shaking legs and ect.);
use symbolic imageries. Also we could include
cut away shots of interviewee’s every day life
(in relation to what they say)
5. Locations
Northfield Fields:
This would be an interesting
place to record a shot of
someone to portray
them as isolated. If you
have someone standing
in the middle of the field
and record a panning
shot of the setting, it
could represent our
theme of social anxiety
and loneliness, in a
creative and interesting
way.
Outside the library:
We suggested filming a shot
for the opening of our
documentary, of an
individual standing whilst
everyone/everything is
moving around them.
Again this shows the
isolation of an individual
who may have anxiety
when around others. It
could also put the
audience in the
individual’s shoes of
feeling afraid while
everything happens
around them.
6. Home:
This would let the interviewee
feel the most confident
and relaxed and therefore
the documentary itself
would look more truthful
Working place:
● This would stress the
interviewee’s expertise
and create an invisible
dialogue between the
specialist and the
‘patient’

8. Questions for Experts in Psychology
- What are the symptoms of anxiety? Physical reaction?
- Can anyone be affected by it?
- At which point does it become a disorder?
- How can people affected deal with that issue? Can it be cured?
- Is there long term effects of anxiety?
- How has this phenomenon evolved in recent years?
- Is there a particular social group that is more affected than others?
- What could be the causes?
9. Werner explores the past, present and future of the internet and its
impact on human interactions in modern society.
Our creative project and this documentary link in these aspects:
Themes: Focus on the portrayal of a current societal phenomenon
affecting human behaviour: New technologies and its
effect on mankind. Our project: The rise of anxiety and
changes in young people's mental health.
Interviews: Both 'ordinary' people and professionals in a specific
area of expertise are interviewed. In our project: The goal is to
state facts about anxiety and present it as an issue at a large
scale in society, but also to show individuals' personal
experience in everyday life and perspective.
Message: Like in Lo & Behold, we aim to invite the spectator to
take a step back and observe today's issues and challenges
in society.
Lo and Behold, Reveries of
the Connected World.

10. Narrative
-Thinking of our narrative in terms of a curve from start to finish, we have decided that we would like to create a
linear narrative. This will include one climactic middle section where we will delve into the issues and difficulties
surrounding anxiety.
-We will have suggestions of sub plots in relation to each interviewee, however the primary source of narrative will
be the collective information we receive from our interviewees.
Symptoms
And introduction
To anxiety
Issues with anxiety
not/in relation to interviewees
how our interviewees
come to terms
with and tackle their
anxiety issues
/provide comfort
11. Structure
Cutaway scenes-
(slide 3)
These will consist of
metaphoric and symbolic
imagery to support the
narrative.
Then we will also have more
accurate and descriptive
shots that will relay
experiences with having
anxiety.
Interview with young adults-
So far we have 3 people that we
will be interviewing with varying
levels and experiences with
anxiety. (see next slide)
This will provide the foundation
for our documentary, How they
were affected by anxiety, how
they deal/dealt with it and tell
their own stories.
Interview with specialists-
(slide 6)
The specialists are going to
provide the facts to support the
person experiences we will be
showing.
They will also create the
foundation for our introduction to
the documentary - talking about
the symptoms without revealing
the condition until later.
The structure of our documentary will consist of 3 main parts:
13. Questions for young adults who suffer from anxiety:
What do you feel when you are anxious? Can you describe your state of mind and physical
reaction when you are in that situation?
In which situation do you feel anxious?
How has/does the living with anxiety affected/affect your university life?
What do you do to fight your anxiety?
How long have you had anxiety for? How has it evolved over the time?
Do you deal with that issue on your own? Do you find it difficult to talk about?
Do you know anyone else who goes through similar times?
