Virtual Machine mobility
Server virtualization places demands on the switching network. It requires high throughput, low latency, good QOS mechanisms and high availability
Of all the traffic types traversing an Ethernet network, storage has risen in prominence in recent years. This traffic type has its very own unique characteristics and demands a separate treatment that other traditional Ethernet traffic.
Alternate modes of application delivery have emerged in recent years. A very reliable wide-area network network is a strong requirement. The network within a data center needs to offer scale, availability, high performance – and a way to support strong user SLAs (around throughput, latency, packet loss and security)

Talk about the problems of three tier.
Then discuss the move to two tier: that delivers a better network – faster, more reliable, lower cost

The “new” two-tier data center network has driven real-world results for our customers.
Interstate Batteries, the number one replacement-brand battery in North America with revenue of over a billion dollars, is a privately-held corporation that thrives on innovation.
They upgraded the access layer using EX4200 switches with Virtual Chassis to create pools of virtualized compute resources in their data center.
With 128 Gbps between EX4200 switches in a Virtual Chassis creating a “direct flight” between servers, virtual machine mobility with VMware’s VMotion occurs ten-times faster than before. Similarly, Microsoft SQL node failure occurs six times faster. Their users remark that live migration and node failure are completely transparent now, giving evidence of transforming the experience.
The economics have been transformed as well. According Interstate Batteries, having a one operating system – Junos software – across the access layer – a change from the “old network,” has decreased trouble tickets by 60%. In addition, the capital acquisition cost for the Juniper architecture saved 35% over the alternatives. These operational and capital saving are evidence of transforming the economics.
Today, we are extending our two-tier advantage with the announcement of the new EX4500 switch. It provides the same benefits of the EX4200 for servers with 10 GbE interfaces.
The EX4500 switch offers forty-eight autosensing 10/1 GbE ports and will be used as a top-of-rack data center access switch. The autosensing capability provides a smooth upgrade path from GbE- to 10 GbE- attached servers. The EX4500 will be commonly deployed in data centers using one RU servers that demand high-density connectivity within the rack.
The EX4500 switch runs Junos software – our single-source operating system that powers switching, routing and security.
This wire-speed switch supports modular uplinks and layer 3 software in the base license, in stark contrast to the Nexus 5000, which offers no layer 3 support.
The ASIC technology in the EX4500 switch will support the Converged Enhanced Ethernet (CEE) and Data Center Bridging (DCB) Standards necessary to converge Fibre Channel storage traffic onto a single Ethernet/IP network.
Compared to the Cisco Nexus 5000, the EX4500 switch transforms the economics and experience by:
Delivering 5-times lower latency
Consuming nearly half the power
Cutting cost by 22% (CAPEX plus 5 yrs, next day svc)
And delivering full standards-based CEE (DCB) is not available from Cisco for the Nexus 5000
The EX4500 is available in 2Q2010, CEE (DCB) will be available in 2H2010, and Virtual Chassis technology will be available in 1H2011.
Today, we are extending our two-tier advantage with the announcement of the new EX8200-40XS line card.
The new line card works with all existing line cards for the EX8200 chassis and is powered by Junos software.
The 40-port autosensing 10/1 GbE line card is ideal for end-of-row data center access, typical for blade servers. With the new line card, a single EX8216 can deliver 640 10 GbE ports per chassis and over 1200 10 GbE ports per rack.
The ASIC technology on the EX8200 line card will support the Converged Enhanced Ethernet (CEE) and Data Center Bridging (DCB) Standards necessary to converge Fibre Channel storage traffic onto a single Ethernet/IP network.
For the EX8200 chassis switches, we will be adding Virtual Chassis technology which will eliminate the need for the spanning tree protocol and scale the size of the data center network core while maintaining a simple two-tier design and minimizing the number of managed devices.
Compared to the Cisco Nexus 7000, the EX8200 switch transforms the economics and experience by:
Delivering 25% higher chassis density & 2.5X rack density
Reducing cost by 25%
Supporting 10/1 GbE autosensing
And full standards-based CEE (DCB) is not available from Cisco for the Nexus 7000
The EX8200 line card will be available in 3Q2010, Virtual Chassis technology will be available and CEE (DCB) will be available in 1H2011.
Finally, we are extending our two-tier advantage with the announcement of the new MX80 3D edge services, 80 Gbps router for data centers.
The MX80 3D brings rich Junos-based edge routing services to the “new” data center network.
The MX80 3D router simplifies Virtual Machine mobility between global data centers with the same ease as within a single data center.
Juniper will be adding Virtual Chassis technology to the MX series routers which will increase the scale and reliability of the edge services while minimizing the number of managed devices.
The majority of currently available cloud services run Junos, giving the MX80 a long future to easily manage the edge service routing needs for cloud data centers.
Compared to the Cisco ASR 1004, the MX80 3D edge services router transforms the economics and experience by:
Delivering 8-times the throughput (80 vs. 10 Gbps)
Using half the power (500 W vs. 960 W)
and half the space (2 RU vs. 4 RU)
The MX80 3D router is available now and Virtual Chassis technology will be available in 1H2011. These are on-demand IT infrastructure service providers and unfortunately, we can’t disclose their names, but they include names you would certainly recognize.

The real problem to solve in the data center is improving the server-to-server flows driven by federated applications and virtualization.
Juniper’s Virtual Chassis technology creates a single fabric for compute pools of servers – potentially hundreds of servers.
Virtual Chassis technology also increases application performance by lowering server-to-server latency and increasing server-to-server throughput. Remember the real-world improvement experienced by Interstate Batteries: 10X faster virtual machine mobility and 6X faster ]SQL node failover.
Virtual Chassis technology also improved operational efficiency and increases reliability by reducing managed device by up to a factor of 10.
Only Juniper offers the 3-2-1 architecture. Based on IDC’s research, Juniper’s data center architecture that collapses three layers to two could free up $1 billion dollars for innovation.
Only Juniper has a vision for a revolutionary data center fabric that will simplify and virtualize data center networks to operate as one logical switch, the ultimate transformation of the experience and the economics.
