Twitter?
You’ve Got to be Kidding ...
• Social side vs business side of Twitter
- There is a lot of “noise” on Twitter. We’ll
learn how to filter what’s important to your
job hunting
- Although you can still follow your celebrity of choice!
More about “following” later
- So, let’s get started ..



Basic Concepts
• Think of Twitter as Micro-blogging
- limit of 140 characters to say something or
share information (aka Tweet)
- various ways to reduce long URLs
- http://bit.ly, http://tinyurl.com or automatically in apps
like TweetDeck

• Following / Follower
- people or organizations that you want to
immediately receive their Tweets, or who
want to immediately receive your Tweets

Important Concepts
• The @reply
- prefacing a tweet with @username indicates
a reply to a specific user
- although, everyone following you can see this

• A mention
- an @reply in the body of a tweet

• Direct message (DM)
- “d username” sends tweet only to that user

• The hashtag (#)
- prefacing an information item with the hash
tag makes it easy to find/show all current
Tweets containing that information



RSS Feeds

• Really Simple Syndication
- A format to publish frequently updated
information
- RSS readers can be web-based, desktop-
based of mobile-based applications
- mail clients, web browsers, stand alone RSS readers

page of USA Today!



Oh, By the Way ...
• No One Can Find Me!
- My UserName isn’t seen with “Find People”
- You need at least 1 follower and about 24 hrs for your
UserName to get indexed by Twitter
- Solution - Invite your friends to Follow you!
- Alternatively - Tweet something - others will find you
from the “Search” function. They click on your
UserName and they’ll get to your timeline. They can
can follow you from there
