organization is supported by financial
donations and the work of volunteer health
professionals. Patients who qualify for the
program receive eye examinations and follow-
up care for up to one year.

 With the ability to treat a number of serious eye
conditions such as macular degeneration,
cataracts, and glaucoma, EyeCare America helps
reduce the incidence of avoidable blindness. As
one of the organization’s 7,000 volunteer
ophthalmologists, Dr. Peter J. Francis stresses the
importance of the foundation’s mission to provide
accessible eye care to those in need. Because of
increases in both diabetes and uninsured patients,
the American Academy of Ophthalmology expects
over 30 million people to be affected by eye
diseases by 2020.
