Pete Riehm Mobile County Commission Platform
1. Mobile county Commission
Platform 2010
This platform is not necessarily in priority order. The first four items address the fundamentals of governing and
hence provide a foundation for the next four specific goals for Mobile County. Successful pursuit of the first eight should
manifest in cooperation and success as outlined in the last plank.
1. First and foremost, restore integrity and confidence in the office. The people must have faith that their government is
honest, responsive, and accountable.
2. Give the people a voice. Effective self-government can only thrive with an informed and involved citizenry, but the
people must know they have a voice through diligent representation.
3. Plan and enforce fiscal prudence. Governments at all levels are facing budget shortfalls, so it is imperative the county
immediately review and implement sound fiscal management to preclude future shortfalls. These challenges should
be addressed through cost-saving and efficiency measures and not through new taxes.
4. Conduct a comprehensive review of every aspect of county government. Improve what we should be doing and
delete what is better left to the citizens or private sector.
5. Improve infrastructure! The traditional role of the County Commission is to build roads; renewed focus must be
placed on that priority mission. The Pay-As-You-Go program is successful, but the current long range road building
plans for Mobile County are woefully inadequate. Traffic congestion is already unsatisfactory and getting worse; we
need more and better solutions. We must also improve drainage and protect water projects.
6. Keep the public safe! Give the Sheriff’s department strong unwavering support to protect the citizens and fight crime.
Violent crimes must decline. Meth Labs in west Mobile County have become epidemic; we must work together with
the Sheriff and citizens’ groups to eradicate this cancer from our communities.
7. Support education in every dimension! The future of Mobile County depends on the education of our youth. There is
no single path for our children to succeed; we must nurture public schools, private schools, alternative schools, and
home schooling to guarantee our children multiple opportunities for a good education.
8. Promote and advance economic development! Mobile County has incredible potential with its vast resources,
excellent transportation, robust business community, and hard working citizens. The County Commission should lead
these efforts in concert with the area Chambers of Commerce, professional and trade groups, and local businesses.
9. Foster a renewed spirit of cooperation and trust throughout Mobile County. Success in one area should not preclude
success in another. We must all strive together to grow and enhance opportunities for everyone. Pulling together, we
CAN and WILL restore the American Dream for everyone in Mobile County!
