How do they follow the advice and how do they differ? How do you feel about
their views?
a. I don’t usually give much thought to what I’m going to see at the conference – I enjoy
just seeing who’s speaking when I get there.
b. I always seem to spend so much money on conferences – the hotels are pricey and the
conference itself isn’t usually cheap. Then there are all the things I buy when I’m there I
always spend much too much on the latest products.
c. What I like to do is sit in on several sessions on the first day – I don’t always attend the
full session – and then go to some of the longer sessions on the next day.

How do they follow the advice and how do they differ? How do you feel about
their views?
d. I really love the buzz around the conference. There is so much going on. Lots of people
are blogging and tweeting, and there is often live feed of some of the sessions, too.
e. Last time, I went there in time for the opening session, and there was a huge line of
people waiting to register. By the time I got in, I had missed twenty minutes of the
speech.
f. I’m always a bit nervous when I meet people, so I prepared what I was going to say. It
was like little speech, really, but very short. I practised at home, so when people asked
me what I did I found it really easy to explain. It helped me a lot.

Direct advice:
• You should open the ‘insert’ menu first.
• You ought to tell Bob what time you’re leaving.
• You’d better hurry or you’ll miss the train.
Softened advice:
• If I were you I’d go early. It gets really busy after lunch time.
• Why don’t you sit here? Mark won’t mind.
Indirect advice:
• I always find it easier to open the document in this menu.
• What I do is put all my drafts in this file.
• When I was there I used the cafeteria on the top floor – the food was much better.

Work in small groups. Using 23.3.5 as an example, think of a business situation you have been
in and give advice to your group members about how to handle it more effectively.
Give your advice in a softened form; include examples of things you did well and things you
would do differently in the future.
Situation:
Examples of successful approach:
1. _______________________________________________________________
2. _______________________________________________________________
Examples of something you would do differently:
