2. He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee
along with him, and he began to be sorrowful
and troubled. (Matthew 26: 37)
Then he said to them, “My soul is
overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of
death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”
(Matthew 26: 38)
3. Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the
ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is
possible, may this cup be taken from me…
(Matthew 26: 39a)
And being in anguish, he prayed more
earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of
blood falling to the ground. (Luke 24: 14)
4. He went away a second time and prayed, “My
Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be
taken away unless I drink it, may your will be
done.” (Matthew 26: 42)
So he left them and went away once more and
prayed the third time, saying the same thing.
(26: 44)
Then he returned to the disciples and said to
them, “Are you still sleeping and resting?
Look, the hour has come, and the Son of Man is
delivered into the hands of sinners. (26: 45)
5. While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the
Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd
armed with swords and clubs, sent from the
chief priests and the elders of the people.
(Matthew 26: 47)
Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings,
Rabbi!” and kissed him. (26: 49)
6. With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached
for his sword, drew it out and struck the
servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
(Matthew 26: 51)
But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he
touched the man’s ear and healed him. (Luke
22: 51)
Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and
he will at once put at my disposal more than
twelve legions of angels? (Matthew 26: 53)
7. In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I
leading a rebellion, that you have come out
with swords and clubs to capture me? Every
day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you
did not arrest me. (Matthew 26: 55)
But this has all taken place that the writings of
the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the
disciples deserted him and fled. (26: 56)
8. The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were
looking for false evidence against Jesus so that
they could put him to death. (Matthew 26: 59)
But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said
to him, “I charge you under oath by the living
God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of
God.” (26: 63)
9. “You have said so,” Jesus replied. (Matthew 26:
54a)
Then the high priest tore his clothes and said,
“He has spoken blasphemy! (26: 55a)
Then they spit in his face and struck him with
their fists. Others slapped him, and said,
“Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?” (26:
67-68)
10. The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter.
Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had
spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today,
you will disown me three times.” (Luke 22: 61)
The men who were guarding Jesus began
mocking and beating him. They blindfolded
him and demanded, “Prophesy! Who hit you?”
(22: 63-64)
11. So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked
them, “Which one do you want me to release to
you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the
Messiah?” (Matthew 27: 17)
“Which of the two do you want me to release
to you?” asked the governor. “Barabbas,” they
answered. (27: 21)
“What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called
the Messiah?” Pilate asked. They all answered,
“Crucify him!” (27: 22)
12. “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked
Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify
him!” (Matthew 27: 23)
All the people answered, “His blood is on us
and on our children!” (27: 25)
13. When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere,
but that instead an uproar was starting, he took
water and washed his hands in front of the
crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he
said. “It is your responsibility!” (Matthew 27:
24)
14. Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had
Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be
crucified. (Matthew 27: 26)
“He himself bore our sins” in his body on the
cross, so that we might die to sins and live for
righteousness; “by his wounds you have been
healed.” (1 Peter 2: 24)
15. …and then twisted together a crown of thorns
and set it on his head. They put a staff in his
right hand. (Matthew 27: 29a)
16. They spit on him, and took the staff and struck
him on the head again and again. (Matthew 27:
30)
17. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they
knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail,
king of the Jews!” they said. (Matthew 27: 29b)
18. They came to a place called Golgotha (which
means “the place of the skull”). (Matthew 27:
33)
19. Above his head they placed the written charge
against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews.
(Matthew 27: 37)
20. Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do
not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23: 34a)
21. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It
is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and
gave up his spirit. (John 19: 30)
22. At that moment the curtain of the temple was
torn in two from top to bottom. The earth
shook, the rocks split… (Matthew 37: 52a)
…and the tombs broke open. The bodies of
many holy people who had died were raised to
life. (Matthew 37: 52b)
23. When the centurion and those with him who
were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and
all that had happened, they were terrified, and
exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”
(37: 54)
24. After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of
the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary
went to look at the tomb. (Matthew 28: 1)
There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of
the Lord came down from heaven and, going
to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it.
(28: 2)
25. [The Angel’s] appearance was like lightning,
and his clothes were white as snow. (Matthew
28: 3)
The guards were so afraid of him that they
shook and became like dead men. (28: 4)
26. The angel said to the women, “Do not be
afraid, for I know that you are looking for
Jesus, who was crucified. (Matthew 28: 5)
He is not here; he has risen, just as he said.
Come and see the place where he lay.
27. Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things
and then enter his glory?” (Luke 24: 26)
And beginning with Moses and all the
Prophets, he explained to them what was said
in all the Scriptures concerning himself. (24: 27)
28. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All
authority in heaven and on earth has been
given to me. (Matthew 28: 18)
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father and
of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (28: 19)
29. God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all
witnesses of it. (Acts 2: 32)
Exalted to the right hand of God, he has
received from the Father the promised Holy
Spirit and has poured out what you now see
and hear. (2: 33)
30. “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God
has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both
Lord and Savior.” (Acts 2: 36)
31. The first Christians gave up everything in the
name of Jesus…
They endured prison, torture, and stoning…
And yet…they never denounced His name!
32. They had to watch family members be killed,
because they believed in Jesus…
Despite being with a few people for 3 years,
Jesus inspired believers to sacrifice anything
over the last 2,000 years…
33. What are you willing to sacrifice for Jesus?
