Presented March 2021 - We’ve been talking about SaaS at Sitecore for a few years, earlier this year we released our first tangible SaaS solution for content with Content Hub and Edge.
I’m sure you’ve also all seen our latest acquisitions of Boxever, Four51 & MooSend. Today we will talk about the the thinking behind these acquisitions and talk about the why.

Notes de l'éditeur
Hello & welcome
Thank you for having us. Speaking at community events is always a great honor, specially virtual SUGCON. Although the timezone is a bit rough.
Personally I’m very excided about the talk we have today. Let’s start with a short introduction of who we are and than dive in.
Today I’m presenting together with Rob Earlam. Rob has more than 15 years of Sitecore experience and has been with Sitecore for over 5 years. He is senior evangelist based from Melbourne Australia and has expertise in DevOps, Commerce and a lot more.
I’m Pieter Brinkman and have been with Sitecore for a bit more than 10 years. Currently I’m Senior Director of TM at Sitecore. Being part of the web and DXP industry for all these years have been an amazing journey. The industry and technology space in constantly evolving. And today Rob and I are going talk about this evolution and what this mean for you as a Developer, for our existing customers and new customers.
We’ve been talking about SaaS at Sitecore for a few years, earlier this year we released our first tangible SaaS solution for content with Content Hub and Edge.
I’m sure you’ve also all seen our latest acquisitions of Boxever, Four51 & MooSend. Today we will talk about the the thinking behind these acquisitions and talk about the why.
If you follow the DXP and web industry you seen that the industry moving, away from Platform DXP’s, to something called a Composable DXP. What’s the difference between a Platform DXP and a composable DXP?
*CLICK*
When we look at a Traditional Platform DXP.
All of the different functions & features are bolted on top of each other in a single architecture, tighly coupled together.
Of course there maybe microservices under the hood powering the different elements, but they’re not separate stand-alone products that can work on it’s own. With this approach, you’re buying the full stack of digital marketing solutions and all capabilities from a single vendor.
This is how Sitecore, with Sitecore XP and other Platform vendors works today. It is the simplicity and complete feature set that attracts a lot of customers towards a stack like this, but the complexity of hosting and lack flexibility what is holding others back.
With Sitecore XP we chose to build the features in the platform natively, others industry vendors choose to acquire and stick products together.
*CLICK*
Than the Composable DXP. Here each of the DXP features that the customer requires are individual standalone products. The customer then builds out their own DXP by integrating each of these different best-of-breed applications. Some of these different DXP components might be provided by the same vendor, but typically in this approach the customer is choosing products from a variety of different vendors.
*CLICK*
The composable the DXP has multiple content sources this could be your headless CMS, your headless commerce solution, internal systems that you expose with API’s, or any other systems like a CRM.
*CLICK*
Then we have the content mesh.
In the content mesh you build you DXP combining content sources *CLICK* with best of breed cloud solutions from one or multiple vendors. Composing the multiple sources and vendors to achieve a DXP with the feature set needed to drives company success.
*CLICK*
In this API first architecture. you can build this composable DXP with any technology you prefer for example next.js, Vue, Angular, .Net Core, it’s all about technology freedom.
*CLICK*
When you Composable DXP is build you can deploy it to your favorite hosting vendor *CLICK*
e.g. Vercel, Azure, again it’s all about freedom of choice.
So why would people want to choose a Compossible DXP? What at the advantages?
A composable DXP provides the Perfect balance between ease of use for the business and technology flexibility.
It provides faster time to value. The API first implementation leads to increased implementation and deployments.
You only implement best of breed solution product covering the features that are needed that solves business problems of today.
It’s all about what the customer needs, not what the platform provides. Not having a full platform DXP provides agility to quickly adjust to changing requirements, industry or world events like a pandamic.
*CLICK*
While building out your Composable DXP you don’t need to replace your full marketing stack, you can use existing marketing stack and content sources.
Bringing a fully tailored solution for customers using the unique combinations of content source, cloud applications, technologies, programming languages and hosting options.
All build with your favourite Technologies and programming languages of your choice, it’s about complete technology freedom.
As Sitecore we see a DXP consisting out of three pillars; Content, Experience and Commerce.
You can host a DXP in your cloud, if you want to host your self or with one of our partners. This would be a great fit for organizations that utilizing a close partner relationship or has specific hosting/security requirements.
If you want Sitecore to host your solution you can host a DXP in our managed cloud. This would be a great fit for organizations who want Sitecore to host everything for them - allowing us to provide additional value-add services (DR, Monitoring, etc).
There is also the option is As A Service, where we take care for the full tech stack. This would be a great fit for organizations who don’t want to host anything – they want a Simple SLA to underpin full service. No IT, hosting, scaling concerns, and crucially it will be the Last upgrade they will ever do.
In your cloud and our cloud we have our Platform DXP, our Platform DXP solutions provide a rich feature set for many business models and use cases and we’ll keep investing in improving our platform. For Content we have XM, Experience XP, and Commerce XC.
As SaaS we’re going to offer a Composable DXP providing best-of-breed capabilities in each of the 3 pillars. The SAAS solution will be fully modular allowing customers to compose the right solution for them.
In the content pillar we’ll provide Hybrid CMS, Digital Asset Management, and Content Operation tools, like MRM and CMP.
In the Experience pillar we’ll provide solutions for Customer Data Platform, Omnichannel personalization and marketing automation.
And for Commerce we’ll provide solutions for Personalized Shopping, Storefront and marketplace and order management.
Sitecore already has strong solutions for Content management and we’ll keep innovating and improving those solutions. The recent aqcuisistions of Boxever, Four51 and Moosend are extending our solutions in the Experience and Commerce pillars.
Well as you might have seen in the previous slide, a DXP consist out of three main pillars – Content, Experience & Commerce. Now if we look at our Platform DXP solution I like to see it as a truck…..
*CLICK* You can buy one of our content products be it XM on its own, or XM with Content Hub behind it, now what happens when you want to add on Experience?
*CLICK* Well now you want to add on XP, and the truck needs to back-up and attach the XP trailer, now what happens when you want to add on Commerce?
*CLICK* Well now you want to add on XC, again the truck needs to back-up and attach the XC trailer to the XP trailer.
With a platform DXP every product layers on top of the last one, you can’t have XP, or XC on their own as you need the components before them for them to function.
If we compare the truck to a platform DXP, there are similarities. They both come with overhead, For example the truck has an engine that need active maintenance from experts. Same for a Platform DXP it needs Sitecore and hosting expert to keep the solution going. Also the truck has a driver who’s full time job is getting the truck to the destination, compare to IT infrastructure teams in your platform DXP solution.
The platform DXP comes with great value when it arrives at his destination, but you need to plan the route carefully as it’s hard to move away from the route with such a big truck.
*CLICK* Well how is the Composable DXP different? Well instead of a truck, this time we think of it more like Lego bricks.
*CLICK* If you want Content we have a few options to choose from
*CLICK* The same if you want experience
*CLICK* And the same again if you want commerce
The key difference here though is that each brick is a product that will work in its own right, individually purchasable……. However the real power comes when you see what you can build once you start to combine the bricks!
And you’re not only limited to our lego bricks, you can combine lego bricks across API first every vendor in the industry.
So if you’re a new customer what does that mean for you? As always the answer is it depends on the requirements……
There is no silver bullet for this. Every customer case is different and should be evaluated per case. But to give you a starting point I’ve define two clear use cases for the different solutions.
*CLICK*
An integrated or headless web experience built on the concepts of pages, layout & item-based modeling, including the ability to leverage prebuilt web controls with tightly coupled personalization using rules.
Implemented using standard WCMS features, including WYSIWYG layout and content editing.
*CLICK* In this scenario you would choose Sitecore XP. XP provides a complete digital marketing tool, providing, a holistic view of customer data, and machine learning-generated insights to personalize experiences in real time. Including WCMS features like WYSIWYG editing/
*CLICK* Now if a customers wants A solution to deliver headless experiences to any channel, combining a best of breed marketing stack to deliver a tailored customer centric solution.
Freedom from vendor specific SDKs and ability to develop each channel in language & framework of choice.
*CLICK* In this scenario you would go for our Composable DXP. Our Composable DXP forms the backbone to your digital content, experience and commerce. Allowing you deliver headless experiences to any channel combining your best of breed marketing stack.
But what about our existing customers???
Same thing count here that this is something you should evaluate per customer together with Sitecore and your customer.
Important to know is that as a existing customer, we don’t want you to feel like you’re being left behind, we’re going to keep on investing in these products.
You chose them for a reason, so you should continue to drive the value from it you’re already seeing today…. Utilizing our new SaaS portfolio as opportunities for you as well……
Lets say you’re on XM today, utilizing the powerful WCMS feature to drive all your WCMS needs.
Lets say you’re on XP today, driving value for your business with Sitecore complete end-to-end Digital Experience platform.
If you are on XC opportunities, You can also extend with our SaaS portfolio.
So nomatter which product you’re using, we’re not leaving you behind with continuous investment in our Platform DXP and opportunities to benefit of additions in our SaaS portfolio.
So now we want to take a look at an example of a customer Journey.
We’re going to use the example of a customer whose using Sitecore XM today, and how they might begin to leverage these new technologies…….
Bottom line is customer requirements
Build the website on Sitecore Experience Manager as WCSM, using feature;
Page creation WYSIWYG editing of layout and content
Content modeling
Content creation
Workflow
Media management
Published to Sitecore Edge for XM. Experience edge provide a SaaS delivery layer, removing the complexity of scaling and delivery servers.
On top of that they build they website using out Headless SDK, which pulls the content and layout data directly from Sitecore Experience Edge
Now the customer wants to add personalization, tracking and testing for their website.
This is where a Boxever comes in to play. Boxever is a Customer Data Platform that not only provide personalization options but also
Data Management providing historic and live customer data with a real-time CDP.
Decisioning, providing next-best-actions based on live customer and business context.
Including data-driven Experimentation, feature to Test and optimize the solution with.
The media library worked well for the webchannel but now they want to improved media management.
They need a DAM solution that can integrate with other marketing technology including the web content management system.
They also want to provide Better tools for collaboration between teams and reduce workflows
Also the DAM will provide a single source of truth for the media assets to ensure brand consistency and brand integrity across all channels, so not only web but also print, advertising, etc.
Sitecore DAM:
- Providing full control of the assets. Single source of truth integrated tightly Sitecore XM. Replacing the Media Library.
For marketing Content Hub provides best in class marketing friendly tools that allow marketing to implement a centralized content strategy that maximized value of content
Content Hub is an integrated marketing friendly solution for unified content planning, production, collaboration and management .
It provides a single source of truth for all the content and assets in an organization
This is where CMP comes in CMP provides marketing friendly tools that allow marketing departments to implement a centralized content strategy that maximized value of content. Content hub products unifies content planning, production, collaboration and management for any channel, including the webchannel.
The content is planned, written and reviewed in CMP and published to XM for use in the web channel.
CMP together with DAM is providing a single source of truth for all the content and assets in an organization.
The customer now has they full content strategy in CMP, they are successfully creating content for all channels. Both offline and online. They want to extend to other channels and create a compelling experience for their customers across all channels.
This is where Edge comes in. Experience edge provide a SaaS delivery layer for published content exposing that content with a Content API based on GraphQL.
This content can be served to all channels, a delivery layer that's high performance and scalable and will enable true omni-channel experiences. Reaching to all channels from online, to offlice including JAMStack architecture based web experiences.
The virtual Assistant and native mobile app directly pulls the content directly from the Sitecore Edge. Boxever is in the middle to provide personalization and tracking of all interactions across all channels. Providing a seamless, consistent experience that consumers expect these days.
The customer is very happy with their omni channel DXP solution, now they want to add conversions and start selling on products in from the web and mobile channel.
The native mobile app and the website will be extended with commerce functionality using Four51 Ordercloud headless cloud platform for B2B, B2C, and B2X.
It delivers cloud-based, API-first, headless eCommerce architecture. Limitless customizations and endless freedom for growth to support your complete commerce strategy.
Including HeadStart toolset that provide customizable apps for buyer, administrative, and supplier experiences.
Now as a final step they want to have they Product Catelogue management in the a marketing friendly tools for the business.
PCM centralizes and automates the management and maintenance of product data that feeds directly into OrderCloud.
Here we have it an example of a composable DXP build, highlighting how both existing and acquired Sitecore products can work together today. But enough talking let’s switch over to Rob in Australia to show this in action.
So now I’m going to hand this over to Rob, who is going to show you an example of how you can integrate some of these different systems today……
Awesome demo built out by team in SC, showing how these products can work together today.
Started by loading CH, and we’re going to use PCM
Start in catalogs – Lighthouse Fitness
See the products
Product families – categories – Lighthouse fitness – cycling category – products – main image from dam
Products
All products
Facet search – refine by catalog – cycling
Open product – all standard data – pricing – packaging/specs
Assets – from DAM
Single source of truth for product data
How can we leverage in other systems?
When you first create account you get portal access
Send raw req, configure OC
Choose correct Sandbox
API Console – raw requests to OC API
Variety of req’s
We’re going to work with catalogs
Start with catalog request – all catalogs in this sanbox
You can see fitness catalog – copy id
Next categories
Note fields- asterist means required
Paste ID in
4 categories returned
Collapse to find cycling
Products – paste values
10 products returned
Text data – name, desc
XP – product # etc
Images / assets – coming from DAM
How can we use it once we have it in OC?
Here is Lighthouse fitness – JSS app built to use both XM and OC
Shop section
Categories – same as before – coming from PCM -> OC -> JSS
Cycling
Products – same as before in PCM
Load product – standard ecom features
What happens when we need to edit the data?
PCM – Cycling category again
Products – some stull under review
Load helmet – fully populated – text – pricing – assets
Im happy – push live – approve product
New button appears – pub to OC
Click
See notification confirmation
OC
Same API request as before – prev count 10
Send request – now we have 11
Collapse results – probably last
There it is – serenity silver stream helmet
JSS
Shop
Cycling category – products
Last product – serenity silver stream helm
Load product
So that’s great CH, OC & XM all together, but what about BE?
Lets track some data!
BE
CDP only enabled – no experience, data decision etc
Load customer data
Currently browsing as anonymous – we can see our anon account – see data about devices what pages I’ve accessed
I’m going to convert this user into a visitor
JSS
Register my user
Enter details Dave Jones
Pick some sporting data – Basketball beginner, but I’m awesome at bowling, that’s my jam!
Homepage – name showing – rego confirmed
View event – register for golf event – I’m keen to pick up a new sport
Content changes
BE
Customer view – Dave Jones is there
Visitor view – anonymous is gone
Customer view – lets load Dave’s profile
Device data
Timeline data
Events for my session – different pages – golf event – registration event – other pages
Now we have that data in CDP it would enable things like Decisions – Next best choice etc – BE bread and butter
These products only came on board recently……
So really what myself & Pieter have been talking about here is the Optionality that Sitecore is looking to offer moving forwards. There will be customers who want to jump on the SaaS train as fast as possible able use the latest and greatest headless technologies and we’re really looking forwards to working to help those customers achieve their goals.
But we don’t want existing customers, or new customers who don’t want to, or maybe cant’, adopt SaaS yet are going to be left behind. There is still a highly capable suite of Sitecore products here to help those customers out as well.
It really is all about Sitecore being available wherever our customers need us to be.
So I just want to finish up here by talking about where we are today and where Sitecore is heading.
*CLICK* As you’ve seen, you can take these standalone products and construct a Headless DXP today. It’ll be a best of breed solution assembled by direct API integration. But we don’t want to stop here.
*CLICK* Our next aim, work on the integration between these products. We 100% want them to remain as stand-alone, individually sellable products, but for customers who do choose multiple products that Sitecore has to offer we want to ensure that the integration comes as standard
*CLICK* And what is the final aim, well we want to be The Leading Cloud DXP. Again, all products individually sellable, but with a unified UI & API across the product suite, so it becomes a natural first choice for customers to select Sitecore products first.
