2. INTRODUCTION
Guidance and counseling have in all of places, been a vital aspect of
higher education. One of the purpose of education is to help the
individual in becoming a useful member of society. If an individual
receives education without proper guidance and counseling, he is not
able to develop his personality fully and thus is unable to serve his
society in terms of his abilities and talent.
3. DEFINATION OF GUIDANCE
1. Guidance is an assistance made available by professionally qualified and adequately
trained men or women to an individual of any age to help him to manage his own
life activities , develop his own point, make his own decisions and carry his own
burdens.

Guidance is one of the major application of psychology
in education. It enables or assist the individual to solve

It refers to a process of helping the individual to
discover himself which means his potentials and
capacities and capabilities , abilities and aptitudes,
interest and to help him in achieving maximum
development and using all potentialities to the

TITLE: Effectiveness of guidance and counseling services in enhancing
student’s adjustment to school academic environment in public boarding
school in Kenya

ABSTRACT:
INTODUCTION: school adjustment is the process of copying in a new
environment in order to attain the individual and school’s set goals and
aspiration. The government ,education and parents have expressed the
need to strengthen school guidance and counseling services in order
enhance student’s adjustment to the school. This study investigated the
effectiveness of guidance and counseling services in enhancing students
adjustment in public boarding secondary school in Kenya.

Objectives- the objectives of this study was establish the
effectiveness of guidance and counseling services in enhancing
student’s adjustment to school academic environment in public
boarding school in Kenya.
Research design- this study adopted a descriptive survey research
design. Data is collected from 3 students and their teacher using
questionniare that was both open and close ended.
Sample population and sample size-this study adopted
purposive as well as random sampling techniques. The target
population was 36671 comprising of 35659 from 3 students, 506
from 3 class teacher and 506 teacher in charge of guidance and
counseling from boarding school in Kitui, Nyeri, Narobi
countries in Kenya.

RESULT: information was sought from form 3 students and
triangulated with responses from their class teacher and teacher in
charge of guidance and counseling .responses student and teacher are
the majority (85.4%) of the students and 94.4% of the class teacher
identified time management as an issue. Response from teacher and
student whether guidance an counseling were effective in enabling
students to adjust in school environment are 88.3% agreed that
guidance and counseling were effective in adjustment in school
environment. Responses from teacher in charge are 88.9% pointed out
that guidance and counseling help to discover and work towards
achieving their full potential enable them to adjust in school academic
envrionment.
26. CONCLUSION
Guidance and counseling received much attention in
the field of education. It has been generally agreed by
all that guidance and counseling must become an
integral component of educational process and the
responsibility implementing the rest to a large extent
or teachers and educational institutions.
