F35 Joint Strike Fighter Packaged For Shipment
Protective Packaging was asked to protect Lockheed Martin's new F35 Joint Strike Fighter for a
shipment, first by truck to the Houston port, then by boat across the Atlantic to England. Since
every imaginable harmful possibility comes to mind in such a trip, PPC had to prepare for the
worst.
Three different layers of protective materials were heat sealed, stitched, and shrunk to protect the
jet. Desiccants and VCI emitters were added to remove absorb any additional moisture and
provide a chemical rust protective coating for the extra insurance a multi-million dollar machine
requires. The fighter made it safe and sound to its final destination and PPC has partnered up
with Lockheed Martin for many more shipments of the newly designed fighter plane.

2. Packaged Engine for Refurbisher
Recently, we were in Grapevine, TX packaging an engine for an aerospace company that
refurbishes parts. This particular engine had to be packaged to endure shipping by truck and by
boat to Peru.
It was a challenge to package the engine while it was still hanging from the crane, but we were
able to get it done, and done well! The solution required an inner bag of MIL-PRF-131 scrim and
an outer layer of shrink wrap as well as 16 count desiccants.
ERCO Aircraft Protection
Out in the aircraft graveyards of Tucson, Arizona sat a sawed-in-half corpse of an old aircraft
that Erco needed transported across the Northern Pacific, corrosion free. They called upon
Protective Packaging to shrink wrap the entire shell in a UV-protected polyethylene material so
once opened at its final destination, the harmful effects of humid air and salt water would be nil.
In six hours, two Protective Packaging employees shrunk the entire body of the aircraft and had
it strapped down ready to ship.

3. Large Commercial Engine
Large commercial engines were being stored outside, wrapped with stretch film. The engines
developed corrosion and had to be completely overhauled.
Corrosion is a plight faced by everyone who works with metals. Its impact on the US economy
has been documented at about 4% of the gross national product. It has also been estimated that
about one third of the corrosion damage could be avoided. Such was the challenge in the case of
large commercial engines. The resulting solution needed to be a combination of custom fitting,
strong, and durable materials combined with a Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI).
A custom made barrier bag was designed to fit over the engine but also fit inside the cradle
holding the engine. The corrosion was totally eliminated, resulting in an annual savings in labor
costs alone of $250,000.
