“Baby Root Canals:” Why should we bother if they’ll fall out anyway?!?
The primary objective for pulp therapy is to maintain the integrity of teeth and supporting struc-
tures. The indications, objectives and type of treatment are based on the pulp vitality, clinical assess-
ment and diagnosis of the teeth. The evaluation and diagnosis involves reviewing the medical and dental
history, chief complaint, subjective report of symptoms, extraoral/intraoral exam, radiographs and addi-
tional tests (i.e palpation, percussion, mobility). Treatment should include consideration of the patient’s
over-all health, growth and development, restorability and alternative treatment options. Treatment
strategies in the primary dentition include indirect pulp treatment (IPT), direct pulp treatment , pulpo-
tomy and pulpectomy. Treatment options in the immature permanent teeth include protective liner, IPT,
partial pulpotomy, pulpectomy and apexification. Recent literature has also shown the possibility of pulp
revascularization for young permanent dentition. An understanding of the dental materials/
medicaments used also contributes to a favorable prognosis. A demo will follow the lecture.

“Lab-Hate Relationship:
Fostering Good Communication between the Dentist and the Technician”
Most often, ill-fitting crowns and other problems with indirect restorations are blamed by the dentist on
the laboratory and vice-versa. These problems stem from poor communication between the dentist and
the laboratory. This brief lecture will focus on what the laboratory requires from the prescription, final
impression and other records sent to them and what other information the dentist should communicate
to the laboratory. This will hopefully result in better fitting and more acceptable restorations and mend
the so-called “lab-hate relationship”.
