1Underground metro project

 India's 1st and Asia's 5th metro rail was
introduced in Kolkata.
 Over a length of 16.45 km and the work on this
project was sanctioned on 1.6.1972
The construction work started in 1973-74.
 After crossing so many hurdles Calcutta Metro
started its journey on October 24, 1984

vehicles.
Growing traffic congestion
Air pollution and traffic accidents has
become a major concern.
To avoid congestion at peak hours.

Why it is needed
 Complement Underground Metro with existing public
transportation
 No displacement or demolition necessary
 No Land acquisition and litigation costs
 Minimal Environmental Impact
 Address socio-economic need
 Good Solution, futuristic, fast and cheap
 Preserve city's culture while being realistic towards
solution

 Requires 1/5th energy per passenger km
compared to road-based transport system.
 Causes less noise, no air pollution and eco
friendly transport system.
 Occupies no road space if underground and only
about 2.60 meters width of the road if elevated.
 Reduces journey time.
 Cost effective mass transport system.
 Reducing traffic transport problems.

 Air-conditioning and ventilation system for
environmental control of stations and tunnels.
 Automatic ticket vending and checking system.
 Automatic door opening / closing .
 A public address system is provided on the trains
to announce approaching stations.

Howrah by an underwater metro line .
o The total length will be 14.67 km (8.9 km underground
and 5.77 km elevated).
o Metro will run under 100 ft. of Hooghly River (first
underwater metro in India).
o Completion date is targeted at 31/10/2014.

 In the 2008 financial year, it had revenue of $100
million.

traffic as nine lanes of buses.
 It reduces journey time by 50 to 75%.
 2400 less buses on the roads…!!
 Less bus will be on the roads so less
congested roads will be.

CONSTRUCTION & METHODOLOGY
 Running section is of rectangular twin boxes.
 Two separate tunnel of 5.4m dia. Separated
centre to centre by two times the dia.
 Station with side platform or island platform
are housed in rectangular
 Shield tunneling method is used for 3.8 km
 1.5 km by TBM(Delhi main-chawri bazaar)
 1 km by NATM method (vishwa vidayalya-old
secretariat)

SAFETY ACTION
 Cut & cover method with continuous diaphragm
walls.
 Diaphragm walls are constructed in advance using
slurry trench method.
 Walls are laterally supported by rolledbuilt up steel
section.
 Vertical rolledbuilt up steel section is used to satisfy
slenderness limit in diaphragm wall & support traffic
as well.
 Stretches of 6.6m in dia. With 300mm thick concrete
lining.

 The Mumbai Metro Railway System Will Cover A Distance Of 146
Km And Link India’s Financial And Entertainment Capital With Its
Suburbs.
 The government of the of Maharashtra and the private Reliance
Dhirubhai Ambani Group will share the costs of the corridor with the
private company picking up 74% of the tab.
 A six coach broad gauge train could have carried the same
number of passengers as an eight coach standard gauge train.

 It means lower operational cost, lower electricity cost.

 Metro railway system was mooted for the city of Chennai by S
Shreedharan the DMRC to the Tamil Nadu CM Jay Lalitha.
 The elevated section of the project is scheduled to be operational by
2011 and the entire project is scheduled to be completed by the
financial year 2014-2015.
About 55% of the corridors in Phase I is underground and the
remaining elevated.

 The Metro rail project was included in the
2007-08 State Government's budget, and an
amount of Rs. 50 crores had been sanctioned for
preliminary works.
 The project is estimated to cost around
14,600 crores (approximately USD 3.5 billion) for
the two corridors totaling 50.1 km.
 The construction started in early 2009 and is
expected to be fully completed by 2014.
 A total of 34 stations have been planned along
the two corridors. As many as 19 stations are
underground and 15 are elevated.

 The project Cochin metro rail is 25 kms long.
 The starting point of Metro rail in Cochin is in
Aluva and the proposed ending point is the place
called Pettah.

Partnership basis.
 Since it has almost 24 stops between the 25
km, average speed 35kms/hour.
 The proposed gauge is standard gauge unlike
the broad gauge on the Delhi Metro.

To encourage people to use Metro there should be
a separate parking place for the monthly pass
holders.
Concern authority should drop their kind attention
to minimize the maintenance cost.

Suggestions
Although Metro systems are more reliable,
comfortable and safer than road based systems & it
reduce congestion on the roads. However
systems planned in India shows that cost
overrunning and under utilization of capacity.
Methodology and arguments used to justify
these systems needs careful analysis. High
capacity system does not necessarily generate
high demand. Estimation of passenger
demand for transit services should consider
complete journey of commuters including
access time. 39

However systems planned in India shows that cost overrunning and under utilization of capacity. Methodology and arguments used to justify these systems needs careful analysis. High capacity system does not necessarily generate high demand. Estimation of passenger demand for transit services should consider complete journey of commuters including access time. 39
