Rarely a day goes by without news of digitisation, artificial intelligence and virtual reality impacting the workforce. Plenty of predictions have been made about the future: more jobs, different jobs, less jobs, even no jobs. No one knows for sure what the outcome will be. Nonetheless, one thing is clear: we’re seeing the emergence of a Skills Revolution, where helping people to upskill and adapt to a fast-changing world of work will be the defining challenge of our time. Organisations need to take immediate action and fast track the upskilling and reskilling of workers, to ensure they have the skills they need for the future. After all, while we cannot slow the rate of technological advances, we can invest in employees’ skills to increase the resilience of people and organisations.

[GE Innovation Forum 2015] The Future of Work in Korea (English) Korea needs a new growth strategy. This is perhaps the most powerful proof that in today’s highly competitive economy, both countries and companies have to constantly look forward. The innovations of the Future of Work can be a game-changer for Korea. The improvements in efficiency enabled by advanced manufacturing and resulting in GE’s vision of the Brilliant Factory can boost productivity and competitiveness in Korea’s industries, from shipbuilding to electronics. Industrial Internet solutions applied to new vessel designs can generate massive cost savings for operators, and healthcare applications can help improve the efficiency of Korea’s healthcare system to cope with the pressure of fast population aging while positioning the country as a global provider of services and technology. This paper is part of a series from GE’s Chief Economist, Marco Annunziata, exploring the next generation of industrial progress. The growing gap between the market places’ current skills and the future capabilities of the marketplace to meet the needs for future development is what is being called the Skills Gap. Organizations and companies in the US and across the globe are noting this every widening gap. Even more disturbing is the large unemployment rate still plaguing the US and other economies. The skills gap, if left unchecked, will have lasting effects on business, the economy, and the world at large. This visualization was based on two prestigious reports from National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) & Mckinsey Center for Government.

In the last 15 years, BC’s tech sector has outpaced the province’s overall economy, growing by 91% to generate over $15 billion dollars in GDP per year2. The sector’s prominence will only increase as technology products and services become ever more ubiquitous and deeply interwoven into all industries, including those not traditionally associated with tech. Despite this promise, BC’s tech sector faces a significant headwind: a growing talent deficit. The availability of talent has been a perennial concern for companies in the sector. This was perhaps most prominently highlighted in 2016’s #BCTECH Strategy, in which tech talent was identified as a fundamental pillar of a thriving tech sector – and was suggested to be lacking in the province. The goal of the 2016 TechTalentBC Report is to quantify this talent deficit and analyze its factors in order to diagnose difficulties and identify specific areas in which remedial action can be taken to ensure that BC’s tech companies have access to the quantity and quality of tech talent required to compete and become global leaders.

Lower barriers to entry and the rise of ecosystems and integrated value chains are eroding organizational boundaries and spurring convergence. Automation, the need for digital skills, demographic shifts and globalization are upending labor supply and demand. The future is in flux. Advances in talent analytics are finally allowing workforce planning to become as dynamic as this environment. Prescriptive analytics tools help organizations go beyond describing “what is happening now” or “what might happen in the future” to control “what should happen.” Scenario-based strategic workforce planning is a digital playground for the business to constantly optimize workforce choices—testing, learning and tweaking across dimensions and futures—to deliver the business strategy.
