As a teacher I need to understand why it is important for me to understand what my digital footprint is and what it can mean for my future. Educators are bombarded with mixed signals about the do’s and don’ts of Social Networking and many districts are trying to restrict school employees digital presence. Whether it is based in fear or out of concern for the image of the district, it is important to know what the scuttle is all about.
You must first know what a digital footprint is before you embark on this journey.
It is:
What you find when you search the Internet for your own name … Google yourself
Data is collected by various web sites you visit or create a profile on (any site you create a username and password for)
Data is collected and recorded by email, search engines, Social Networking sites, cell phone and or Video game companies
Take a moment to Google yourself. What kinds of information do you find. How would you feel if your students were to find this information or your administrator or your School Board. Is your reputation in good standing after this? How do you fair? How many social networking sites have you created a profile on? Are you on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Ning, Delicious, Diigo, Google +? Is this the image you want to be reflected?
There are many compelling reasons to be concerned whether you are a veteran teacher or a soon to graduate professional looking to get your foot in the door. Employers, not just K-12 institutions are looking at your online reputation. They are making decisions about your future based upon what they see.
As a teacher or future teacher you should be aware of not only what NOT to do but what you can do to be an attractive potential employee.
There are many things you can do to use social media to promote yourself and you interests. By showing a genuine interest in and support of a few projects and areas instead of “liking” everything that passes your way, you can show you are committed and serious. You want to portray a professional image and keep your personal life – just that, personal!.
You should make sure your privacy settings are locked down as tight as necessary and you are not letting students become your “friend” in your personal networks.
