The Winter Olympic Games occur every four years and feature winter sports like alpine skiing, bobsleigh, figure skating, and ice hockey. The first Games were held in Chamonix, France in 1924. Now nearly 100 years later, the Winter Olympics have grown to include over 80 participating countries and thousands of athletes competing across 15 winter sport disciplines. The host city puts on an opening and closing ceremony and medal ceremonies are held after each event to honor the top three placing athletes.
