3. Before you start learning
Bulgarian language, you
need to learn the Bulgarian
alphabet.
In Bulgarian, we use the
Cyrillic alphabet. The same
alphabet (with some
modifications) is used in
other languages as Russian,
Ukrainian, Belarusian,
Serbian, Macedonian and
some Central Asian Altaic
languages.

4. All over the country on 24th
May schools are decorated
with flowers and portraits of
the brothers St. St. Cyril
and Methodius.
The Bulgarian alphabet was
created in 855.
With the accession of
Bulgaria to the European
Union on January 1, 2007,
Cyrillic became the third
official alphabet of the EU.

5. This is the first alphabet. It had more
letters which were more complicated.

6. • In the years it changed to 30 letters
/ 6 vowels, 22 consonants and 2
diphthongs - ю and я.

7. Some of the letters in the Bulgarian alphabet have a graphic
equivalent of Latin, but there are 19 letters that you cannot find in
Latin – Б, Г, Д, Ж, З, И, Й, Л, П, У, Ф, Ц, Ч, Ш, Щ, Ъ, Ь,
Ю, Я.
These letters are difficult for pronunciation
For example :
Ж ж like S in pleasure
З з like Z in zipper
П п like P in post
У у like OO in boot
Ц ц like TS in cats
Ш ш like SH in cash
Ъь like EA in early
Юю like YOU in you
Я я like YOU in young

10. Common Phrases in Bulgarian
In the morning : Dobro utro! ( Good morning!)
During the whole day: Dobar den! ( Good afternoon!)
Zdravei! ( in singular) Zdraveite! (in plural or official)
In the evening: Dobar vecher! ( Good evening!)
When we go to bed: Leka nosht! ( Good night!)
or Sladki sanishta! ( Sweet dreams!)
When you leave from somewhere:
Chao! ( between friends) Bye!
Dovijdane! (Good bye!)
Priyaten den! (Have a nice day!)
When you leave Bulgarians may wish you:
Kasmet! ( Good luck)
