After many years in the classroom, I’ve
learnt that when it comes to the stuff that
really matters, it’s not what you say, but
what you do, that counts.
It’s a big responsibility being a role model
on your bad days as well as your good
ones, but it doesn’t half focus the mind…

Of course I didn’t appreciate at the time
quite what an impact Mr Greensmith would
have on my life – he taught me how to
read and count, but more than that, he
taught me that I mattered; that it was okay
not to be okay and that if I asked for help,
he would gladly give it.
He saw me as a person worth caring about
– and then, so did I
