6. B. They were commanded to
have children (Gen.
1:27-28). God said, “A
man [male] will leave
father and mother
and be united to his
wife [female], and
they will become one
flesh” (Gen. 2:24).
7. C. Paul makes it clear
that “one flesh”
implies a sexual
relation between a
male and female
(1Cor. 6:15-17).
D. The writer of Hebrews proclaims that
“marriage should be honored by all, and
the marriage bed kept pure, for God will
judge the adulterer and all the sexually
immoral” (Heb. 13:4).
8. E. The Ten commandments declare: “You shall
not commit adultery” and “You shall not covet
your neighbor’s wife” (Exod. 20:14, 17).
9. Biblical Teaching
I. God Ordained Heterosexuality
A. The Ten commandments declared, “You
shall not commit adultery” and “You
shall not covet your neighbor’s wife”
(Exod. 20:14, 17).
These passages make it plain that God
ordained sex to be used between a male and
female within the bonds of heterosexual
marriage.
10. II. Sodom and Gomorrah were
Condemned for homosexuality
1. The term “sodomy” is an indication of the sin that
characterized the city of Sodom.
11. 1. The term “sodomy” is
an indication of the sin
that characterized the
city of Sodom.
2. The men of the city
said plainly to Lot, “Where
are the men who came to
you tonight? Bring them
out so that we can have
sex with them” (Gen.
19:5).
12. 3. Lot’s attempt to appease their sensual
appetites with his virgin daughters failed, and God
destroyed the cities.
13. 4. Jude added, “Sodom
and Gomorrah and the
surrounding towns gave
themselves up to sexual
immorality and
perversion.” Hence, the
Bible declares that “they
serve as an example of
those who suffer the
punishment of eternal
fire” (Jude 7).
14. III. The Mosaic Law Condemned
Homosexuality
1. God said, “I am the LORD. Do not lie with
a man as one lies with a woman; that is
detestable. Do not have sexual relations with
an animal and defile yourself with it. That is a
perversion” (Lev. 18:21-23).
15. 2. God judged the Canaanites for homosexuality. Moses said,
“Do not defile yourself in any of these ways, because this is
how the nations that I am going to drive out before you
became defiled. Even the land was defiled; so I punished it for
its sin, and the land vomited out its inhabitants” (vv. 24-25).
16. 3. It is clear from the strong language
(“detestable,” “defile,” “perversion,”
“vomited”) and the capital punishment
exacted that God considered homosexual
acts a very serious sin.
17. 4. His wrath was not limited to Jews who
practiced these perversions, but also
extended to the Gentiles.
18. IV. Homosexual Temple Prostitutes were
Condemned
1. Not only were homosexual practices
condemned in general, but they were also
condemned as part of temple cult practices.
20. 1. Not only were homosexual practices condemned in
general, but they were also condemned as part of
temple cult practices.
2. Moses wrote, “No Israelite man or woman is to
become a shrine prostitute. . . because the LORD
your God detests them both” (Deut. 23:17-18).
21. 3. God “detests” them for what they are,
namely, a perversion of the holy
heterosexual marital use of sex that God
had ordained.
22. V. Homosexuality Condemned in
Judges
1. The wicked men of the city wanted to
have sex with a male visitor (Judg. 19:22).
23. 2. The master of
the house urged
the homosexual
crowd,
“Don’t do such a
disgraceful thing”
(v. 24).
24. 1. The wicked men of the city wanted to have sex
with a male visitor (Judg. 19:22).
2. The master of the house urged the
homosexual crowd, “Don’t do such a disgraceful
thing” (v. 24).
3. He then attempted to appease them, by offer-
ing his virgin daughter and a concubine to
them (v. 24).
4. So the men “raped [the concubine] and
abused her throughout the night, and at
dawn they let her go” (v. 25).
25. V. Homosexuality is Condemned in
Judges
5. When her master found the concubine limp on the
doorstep the next morning, he cut her in twelve pieces and
sent one piece to each of the twelve tribes!!!
6. Everyone who saw it said, “Such a thing has never been
seen or done, not since the day the Israelites came up out
of Egypt. Think about it! Consider it! Tell us what to do!” (v.
30).
7. It is difficult to image a greater perversity growing out of
homosexuality than this. But as horrible as the rape and the
mutilation that followed were, the Levite viewed giving his
concubine to them as a less “disgraceful thing” than
homosexuality (v. 24).
26. VI. The Prophets Condemned Sodomy
1. The prophetic writer of Kings (perhaps
Jeremiah) speaks over and over of the evil of
homosexuality.
27. 2. He wrote, “There were even male
shrine prostitutes in the land; the people
engaged in all the detestable practices of
the nations the LORD has driven out
before the Israelites” (1 Kings 14:24).
28. 3. Later, one of Asa’s reforms was that “he
expelled the male shrine prostitutes from
the land” (1 Kings 15:12).
29. VI. The Prophets Condemned Sodomy
4. Likewise, Jehoshaphat “rid the land of the rest of the
male shrine prostitutes who remained there even after the
reign of his father Asa” (1 Kings 22:46).
30. 5. When a good king Josiah later prompted a
revival “he also tore down the quarters of the male
shrine prostitutes, who were in the temple of the
LORD” (2 Kings 23:7).
31. 6. The
prophet
Ezekiel spoke
out against the
sensual sins
of Sodom,
calling them
“detestable
things” (Ezek.
16:50). This is
the same word
used to
describe
homosexual
acts in
Leviticus
(18:22-23).
32. VII. Romans 1 Condemns Homosexuality Among Pagans
1. Paul calls it a sin for which “the wrath of God is
being revealed from heaven” (Rom. 1:18).
33. 2. It is called a “sinful desire,” “sexual impurity,”
“degrading,” “a lie,” “shameful lusts,” “sinful desire,”
“unnatural,” “inflamed . . . Lust,” “indecent” and a
“perversion” (Rom. 1:24-27).
34. 3. As a result of these kinds of wicked practices God “gave
them over to a depraved mind,” and they became “filled
with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity”
(Rom. 1:29).
35. VII. Romans 1 Condemns Homosexuality
4. “Even their women exchanged natural
relations for unnatural ones. In the same way men
also abandoned natural relations with women
and were inflamed with lust for one another.
Men committed indecent acts with other men, and
received in themselves the due penalty for their
perversion” (vv. 26-27).
36. VII. Romans 1 Condemns Homosexuality
4. “Even their women exchanged natural
relations for unnatural ones. In the same way men
also abandoned natural relations with women
and were inflamed with lust for one another.
Men committed indecent acts with other men, and
received in themselves the due penalty for their
perversion” (vv. 26-27).
5. The two words “exchanged” and
“abandoned,” both indicate that a free and
sinful choice was made when they engaged in
such sinful acts. This refutes the claim that
certain persons are born with homosexual
tendencies they cannot avoid.
37. VIII. Homosexuals aren’t in the Kingdom
1. 1 Cor. 6:9 says, “Neither the sexually immoral,
nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor male prostitutes,
nor homosexual offenders . . . will inherit the
kingdom of God.”
38. IX. First Timothy Condemns Homosexuality
1. Paul declared that the law was made for,
“murders, for adulterers and perverts, for slave
traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever
else is contrary to sound doctrine” (1 Tim 1:9-10).
2. The word “perverts” is a broader word for other
sexual sins than “adultery.” It includes
homosexual acts, and is even translated
“sodomites” (NKJV) or “homosexual” (NASB).
