Turn Digital Reputation Threats into Offense Tactics - Daniel Lemin
Turning whispers into roars by Liz McGettigan
1. From a whisper to a
ROAR!

2. We are all doing so much amazing stuff but
we just don’t tell anyone!!
WE NEED TO FIND
OUR VOICE!
3. We’re all in favour of them
and get a warm, fuzzy
feeling about them.
But saying how much we
adore them doesn’t protect
bamboo-munchers or
libraries from extinction.
LIBRARIES ARE A BIT LIKE PANDAS
9. ….they will be born into a
technological and information led
economy

Potter
10. Never has technology been
so focused on
The access of information
never has information
been so important
our area of expertise
surely ?

11. never has technology
been so
focused on the access
of information – our
area of expertise -
yes ?
Courtesy Ned
Potter
12. …and never has the
competition for the
customer been so hard
Courtesy Ned Potter
13. ..because it has never
been easier to access
information without
libraries!
22. Burnout from our battle for funding is one of the
most significant threats to public sector
librarianship
XX
23. Why the Library
experience must evolve!
I am your new customer, I am unique, I want to be
special, pay me real attention, excite me, open my
eyes and make my time with you a fabulous
experience
57. 50 to 70 billion connected
devices by 2020
You ain’t seen nothing
yet!
58. ….love it or hate it we are
right in the middle of it all,
collaborating on all sorts of
new projects, applications
and portals.
59. …….. who will introduce
Joe Public to all of these
new technologies?
…….who will skill him up
for the new world as we
once did with books and
access to the internet?
……who if not the
public library?
60. 32 % of Internet users are on the platform, but more
importantly, they’re our type of Internet users!
If something is important,
tweet it 4 times
Put your twitter
handle everywhere!
61. Snapchat flotation on the
stock market that could value
the five-year-old mobile app
known for its disappearing
photos at as much as $25bn.
62. About 205.6 billion emails are sent
every day.
Personalized emails have 30% higher CTRs than their
non-personalized counterparts.
66. …metadata, fabulous unique collections from
libraries everywhere! – Google eat your heart
out!
….this is us surely?
Imagine a global library platform with access to
all that! WOW!
WHAT IS STOPPING US? WHO CAN
WE BLAME? CAN’T BE US SURELY?
67. “libraries are the
last remaining
public spaces that
don’t like our
wallets more than
they like us”
Matt Haig
76. ASK YOURSELF - How exactly is digital technology
changing the way your customers behave and the
way that existing, emerging and potential
competitors do business?
77. We need to get better at
• Analytics - data and
insights are the starting
points
• Marketing technology can
support exceptional
customer experiences
Remaining relevant is not simply
a matter of creating an app or
smartening up your website, but
finding ways to use customer
data to create more meaningful
and relevant customer
experiences at every touch point
78. • x
• Own the smart city
agenda!
• Start thinking ROI and
monetising some of
the add-ons we do!
• New serious
partnerships!
• Value what we do!
Find a big loud
voice!
79. It is clear that librarianship
of the future is not for
those who seek a quiet
refuge or who won’t
embrace ongoing change
in the information,
technology, and
community needs
landscapes.
80.
81. “there are those who will ask where
are libraries going today?
Then there are those of us who will
tell you where we are taking libraries”
Hope Schaller Wester
Which one are you?
We live in times of massive disruption but for me never more exciting or fascinating! Disruption isn’t new to us in libraries. Egyptians made reading easier with papyrus, monasteries chained their books . The printing press totally disrupted the world of manuscripts and scribes and newspapers emerged to fill a need for timely information.
horses gave way to cars and barges to trains and buses – But libraries and librarians are still here !
The world of libraries and information has changed hugely over the last decade and is continuing to be disrupted and develop at a very fast pace into something possibly quite unrecognisable. DESPITE THE CHALLENGES WE ARE STILL HERE!
“No other institution, public or private, does a better job of reaching people who have been left behind in today’s economy, have failed to reach their potential in the school system or
who simply need help navigating an increasingly complex world.”
This is a bit like preaching to the converted Lets just look at this short but impressive film – courtesy of Ned potter
Social media has totally changed the way we learn and communicate. In a world where our technology is so pervasive that we spend most of our time looking at our phones like this
Learning on giant discovery tables / I pad lets our customers add and interact alone or in groups – Case study has shown amazing results with adults and children with attention or learning difficulties
Great for local history and heritage workshops and classes
The place experience is also crucial and many services have created fabulous spaces - Spaces to enthral new audiences. (u may be surprised to hear this) These are just 4 examples
This University in Tokyo ditched boring meeting rooms for the futuristic “floating” glass classes.
What’s missing from these 4 images?
A library without print books was once unthinkable. Now it seems almost inevitable. That decision is just one milestone in the rapidly developing identity crisis of 21st-century libraries.
I believe If in talking to people they want emerging technologies more than they want books, libraries have to respond to that, even if it means closing up shop and moving entirely online.
This is an all digital library in a café bar. Placed in an area where the library doesn’t reach , enabling access to all library resources digitally. (with coffee wine and conviviality)
WOW – The amazing Aarhus Library so cooool! Different spaces for every need and every learning style!
You’d be forgiven in thinking there was only doom and gloom in the UK and we aren’t building anything amazing just look at some of these
E-MAIL
About 205.6 billion emails are sent every day. Spare yours the fate of not being read! This is a whole seoerate presentation!
Look at this next short film involving audience in promotion
In the age of constant information everywhere and an abundance of available tools and techniques, discovering the right quality and relevant information is still a challenge for libraries and our customers
Search is changing. Google’s increased emphasis on its Knowledge Graph and predictive search along with hardware hopes is moving search in new directions at the same time that library databases are consolidating into discovery platforms and next-generation integrated library systems. Meanwhile, the diversity of devices and the proliferation of apps are leading to more and more different ways to search it all
Surely this is where we as librarians come into our own?
Engagement
Who knows about our impact ere this? While budgets and support was strong all of this was just part of the day job.
Who knows about this?
