PUBLIC SPEAKING
Public speaking is the process of speaking to a group of
people, in a conscious manner intended to inform,
manipulate, or entertain the listeners.
In public speaking, as in any form of communication,
there are five basic elements, often expressed as
following:
 Who is saying?
 What the person is saying?
 How the person is saying?
 When the person is saying?
 Why the person is saying? ( the purpose)
Following are the characteristics:
 FLEXIBLE:
Good speakers are flexible in terms of how they deal with
different type of people. They can quickly change their speech
or speaking style for a wide range of groups, making it clear for
each and every person.
 MOTIVATIONAL:
They always motivate the listeners. They are an inspiration to
others. Good motivational speakers are usually strategic
thinkers, they have creative ideas and solutions that can
address specific problems according to the situations.
Contd..
 KNOWLEDGEABLE:
Experienced speakers have better general knowledge and have
a lot of experience.
 CREATIVE SPEAKER:
These kind of people can come up with creative ways to
motivate people and in case of any problems, they handle
them very diplomatically.
 HUMOROUS SPEAKER:
They are kind of funny in nature. They are always entertaining
and so people like to listen to such speakers. Such speakers can
grab attention of the audience through their humorous nature.
 MEMORABILITY:
The speaker should keep memorize few phrases. It may become
useful during the speech to explain the audience.
 APPROPRIATENESS:
It should be suited to the audience. They must be able to
understand it.
 POSITIVE:
It should make its points in a positive manner, negative ones
are not easy to remember.
 CLARITY & VOICE:
To be an effective speaker, must be audible and understandable.
Talking at normal speed may lose the listeners, especially if the
topic is complex.
 A good speaker is lively, interested, enthusiastic, and vital.
 He feels alive, he sees his audience as living people. He
is involved in his topic and considers it very important. So he
speaks with enthusiasm.
 A good speaker has a sense of responsibility to his listeners.
 If the speaker talks for five minutes to 100 listeners he is taking
500 minutes out of people’s lives. He tries to say something that
will be worth that precious time.
 A good speaker has a sense of leadership. He is positive ,
friendly and straight forward.
 A good speaker keeps his sense of humor.
 He doesn’t let his confidence become overconfidence.
Contd..
 The speaker always speaks clearly. He is clear in his
words so that the audience can understand. What the
speaker has to convey.
 He always keeps an eye contact with the audience.
 He speaks sensibly and as a leader should.
 The speaker organizes his speech. If there are several
ideas related to the topic he does not make it too
long so that the audience do not get bored.
 He is always polite while giving the speech.
 He is honest.
 MEANING:
The challenge to the speaker is to make an appropriate
presentation which responds to the constraint of the
occasion.
A particular time, especially as marked by certain
circumstances or occurrences.
A special or important time, event, ceremony,
celebration, etc.
The immediate or incidental cause or reason for some
action or result.
 There are nearly many occasions to deliver a speech, however an
occasion has a large influence on the type of speech to be
delivered.
 Certain speeches describe the types of occasions.
To understand this, give a look at following examples:
 In joyful occasions the speech is light-hearted and
cheerful.
When the occasion is warm and happy, the speech
will be cheerful. This is because nobody from the
audience wants to hear any depressing things when
they have been invited to share a lively occasion.
 A sorrowful occasion has a solemn speech, while at
the same time there should be a calm and comforting
speech. Speeches by occasion such as death would be
sorrowful while simultaneously celebrating the life of
the deceased.
 A welcome speech is a speech given by someone in
order to welcome someone new into the company,
party, organization, school, etc.
 They are usually given in a positive light, sharing the
qualities of the newcomer and letting the newcomer
know they are welcome and can receive support from
the group.
 A welcome or welcoming speech is prepared to honor a
person or group on their arrival. This could be for an
event or for the beginning of a planned activity.
“Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. I’m delighted to
be with you today at our award presentation
ceremony. This ceremony recognizes members of our
community who have contributed something special
to our environment. During the course of this
ceremony you’ll hear some of the amazing things that
have been accomplished in the last twelve months.
I welcome you all and trust you will find the ceremony
both rewarding and inspiring.”
“Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. I’m
delighted to be with you today at our annual
spring fair. This event showcases members
of our community and their efforts to raise
funds for much needed projects. Like you, I
am looking forward to sampling some of the
fine fare available today in the hope that
together we can see these projects come into
being.
I declare the spring fair open. Let’s all have
some fun.”
 An often informal vote to thank
some chairman or other officer of
an organization for the work he has
done on the organization's behalf,
sometimes ending with
the presentation of a gift.
 A formal public speech that thanks so
meone for something that they have
done.
 The speech is always short and usually starts with “ I
have the pleasant task of thanking….”
"Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen! On behalf of
whole group, I am very happy to thank Fred for giving
his speech on 'Promotion in the company' to us this
evening.”
After this the speech would end with a conclusion.
