Augmented reality
o Augmented reality (AR) is a live direct or indirect view of a physical, real-world
environment whose elements are augmented (or supplemented) by computer-
generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data.
• It is related to a more general concept called mediated reality, in which a view
of reality is modified (possibly even diminished rather than augmented) by a
computer. As a result, the technology functions by enhancing one’s current
perception of reality.
 By contrast, virtual reality replaces the real world with a simulated one.
 Augmentation is conventionally in real-time and in semantic context with
environmental elements, such as sports scores on TV during a match. With the
help of advanced AR technology (e.g. adding computer vision and object
recognition) the information about the surrounding real world of the user
becomes interactive and digitally manipulable. Artificial information about the
environment and its objects can be overlaid on the real world.
Applications of AR
 Gaming
 Education
 Medical Field
 Navigation
 Sports and Entertainment
 Research
 Marketing & Advertising
Augmented reality in Gaming
 Augmented reality allows gamers to experience digital game
play in a real world environment. In the last 10 years there has
been a lot of improvements in technology, resulting in better
movement detection and the possibility for the Wii to exist, but
also direct detection of the player's movements.
Things that are require for playing game are :
 Head mount display
 Eye glasses
 Joypad
This is one of game played by using augmented reality
technology .this game is being played in the parking lot.
Games become very realistic and interesting …
Augmented reality in education
 Visual and highly-interactive forms of learning
 Digital Media- superimposed into a student’s real time environment
 Interactive participation with computer generated simulations of
historical events
 Learning via remote collaboration
Signification in Education
 Provides rich contextual learning for
individuals learning a skill.
 Students take control of their own learning.
 Appeals to multiple learning styles.
 Engages learner in ways that have never
been possible
 No real consequences if mistakes are made
during skill training
 Shifts learners from passive to active learning
modes.
Augmented reality in Medical
 Since 2005, a device that films subcutaneous veins, processes and projects the
image of the veins onto the skin has been used to locate veins. This device is
called Vein Viewer.
 Augmented Reality can provide the surgeon with information, which are
otherwise hidden, such as showing the heartbeat rate, the blood pressure, the
state of the patient’s organ, etc. AR can be used to let a doctor look inside a
patient by combining one source of images such as an X-ray with another such
as video.
Examples include a virtual X-ray view based on prior tomography or on real time images
from ultrasound and confocal microscopy probes, visualizing the position of a tumor in the
video of an endoscope, or radiation exposure risks from X-ray imaging devices. AR can
enhance viewing a fetus inside a mother's womb. It has been also used for cockroach
phobia treatment. Also, patients wearing Google Glass can be reminded to take
medications.
Navigation
AR can improvise the effectiveness of navigation devices. Information
can be displayed on an automobile's windshield indicating
destination directions and meter, weather, terrain, road conditions
and traffic information as well as alerts to potential hazards in their
path. Aboard maritime vessels, AR can allow bridge watch-standers
to continuously monitor important information such as a ship's
heading and speed while moving throughout the bridge or
performing other tasks.
BMW steps into augmented reality with
AR driving glasses for Mini
The glasses are powered by a
Qualcomm 805
Snapdragon processor, have 2GB
of RAM and are equipped with two
HD displays. Drivers activate and
control functions via buttons on the
top of the frames.
Architecture
 AR can aid in visualizing building projects. Computer-
generated images of a structure can be
superimposed into a real life local view of a property
before the physical building is constructed there; this
was demonstrated publicly by Trimble Navigation in
2004. AR can also be employed within an architect's
work space, rendering into their view animated 3D
visualizations of their 2D drawings. Architecture sight-
seeing can be enhanced with AR applications
allowing users viewing a building's exterior to virtually
see through its walls, viewing its interior objects and
layout.
Augmented reality markup
language
The Augmented Reality Markup Language (ARML) is a data standard to
describe and interact with augmented reality (AR) scenes. It has been
developed within the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) by a
dedicated ARML 2.0 Standards Working Group. ARML consists of both
an XML grammar to describe the location and appearance of virtual
objects in the scene, as well as ECMAScript bindings to allow dynamic
access to the properties of the virtual objects, as well as event handling,
and is currently published in version 2.0. ARML focuses on visual
augmented reality (i.e. the camera of an AR-capable device serves as
the main output for augmented reality scenarios).
Advantages of Augmented reality
 It can be used used easily with
help of some simple gestures
 We can feel what be see/watch
(ex: Movies).
 Can perform repetitive tasks.
 Brings life to games and
entertainment.
 Used for military training.
 Architecture and interior designs
 Engineering designs
 Presentations
Disadvantages of Augmented reality
 Limited use only .
 lack of privacy
 decreases imaginative & creative skills
Microsoft's HoloLens to help NASA scientists
explore Mars
For $279 you can buy a version of the headset (which has about two hours
of battery life) that allows you to place your iPhone 6 or Android phone
into the headset for VR functionality (much like the Samsung Gear VR).
And for $359 you get the all-in-one version of the device (with about one
and a half hours of battery life), which has its own built-in display (no
mobile phone necessary).
