Capturing of informal learning. Formal learning already has methods of capturing learning in the guise of diplomas and certificates. They can supplement traditional socially-accepted acknowledgements. They’re easily comprehensible, extensible and referenceable. A nice in-between a degree and nothing.
What if learning were more like the web? Open, remixable, free.

They can act within formal, traditional learning venues and they can accommodate new, alternative learning practices.

This conversation does not have to be adversarial, but instead can accommodate both traditionally recognized validations of learning and skills as well as new and informal alternative credentials.
As a part of our commitment to learning on the web, Mozilla Foundation is creating the open badge infrastructure. We hope this infrastructure will extend the value of badges from each issuer across the entire badge ecosystem, making it easy for learners to collect and combine badges across various websites, networks and applications.
