How Do You Cope With Stress As a Caregiver
There isn't any lack of pressure in your life if you're presently a caregiver. Caring for family
members or friends can be (and generally is) physically, emotionally, financially, spiritually, and
psychosocially nerve-racking. "Relaxing" rarely makes it on the listing of activities to do for most
caregivers. Thus, rather than dancing round the problem of strain and hoping things will get better,
let's spend some time now stressing pressure.
Anxiety is our response to some destabilizing force in life. Anything that upsets the tenuous
equilibrium of life is thus perceived as trying. Perhaps an image would be helpful. Imagine enjoying
a wonderful day on your own pond of tranquility. Calm breezes. Smooth waters. Blue skies and sun.
And then, a huge boulder falls unexpectedly into your pond. WHAM! Your world is rocking and
rolling. Smooth sailing is a thing of the past--a distant memory. You need to figure out the way to
drive the waves now. Trying? Absolutely!
I presume it is reasonable to say that sickness and aging regularly qualify as "boulders" in life-
-sources of anxiety, wave generators. This past week an emotional PBS documentary, covered
families have the ability to deal with the ripple effects of caregiving. The documentary depicts the
journey realistically and respectfully. The health professionals interviewed were committed to caring
for their nearest and dearest, often sacrificing their particular health and well-being in the method.
The families discussed the crushing fiscal costs of care along with other noteworthy prices: purpose
changes, divorce, mental and physical distress, employment concerns, and strained sib relationships.
Each family shared a unique narrative of caregiving. Yet, every family fought with the universal
strains of caregiving. Caregiving and stress go hand-in-hand. Common ground. Common problems.
Common cause.
The PBS documentary serves as a call to action for individuals and families. Caregiving is stressful-
-that is the reality. Furthermore, anxiety is magnified as a result of poor planning and lack of
resources. Thus, if we want to care well for others and have others care nicely for us, we have to
plan well. Granted, we can't expect every twist and turn in life. But there are "knowns" in life. As
human beings, we need to acknowledge plan and our finitude for our eventual decline and death.
Before a medical care catastrophe drops into your pond of tranquility, discuss the many aspects of
caregiving along with friends and your family --who, what, when, where, why, and how. By thus
doing, you can work collectively to mitigate the stresses related to caring for every other and to
manage. Being realistic regarding the journey of being well prepared and caregiving enables us to
maintain the blessings of caring for our loved ones and a balance between the weights. Thus, instead
of being stressed, let's stress the necessity to prepare to care!
