Diesel emissions are the greatest output of atmospheric nanoparticles such as cerium oxide and
nitrogen oxides which are the cause for more than two–thirds of all particulate matter that will emit
from U.S. transportation alone.1Since diesel emissions output these semi–volatile particles at such a
high rate, they have started to create a ground level ozone which can irritate the respiratory system
and cause cardiovascular illnesses. While diesel fuel is combusting, any excess turns into soot or
particulate matter. This is composed of hundreds of elements which include particulates of all sizes,
including ultra–fine particulates that are small enough to pass through the cells of human lungs.
When these particulates get brought into the atmosphere they will vaporize and oxidize which forms
a greater mass of secondary organic aerosol. These ultra–fine particles are such an increasing danger
to humans because they make up 80–90% of all diesel emissions. They are causing tens of thousands
of deaths worldwide but particularly in Europe, where there are higher populations in smaller
areas.2These deaths are mostly coming from the nitric oxide being emitted by the uncombusted

environment. It comes in many different forms such as water, air, noise, and light, all of which
affect our society in different ways. The focus of my essay is specifically about air pollution and

gas, and oil. Fossil fuels contribute to the amount of sulfur dioxide that is emitted into the
atmosphere. Not only is burning fossil fuels a problem but the exhaust from air planes, trucks,
vehicles, factories, and industries are also a problem. The exhaust from these vehicles can cause
nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide to be emitted to the atmosphere.
Nitrogen oxide, or NOx, is a group of gases composed of nitrogen and oxygen and are released to the
air through vehicle exhaust and the burning of fuels, natural gas, and oil. Nitrogen oxide is also the
main contributor to smog, acid rain, and the tropospheric ozone. It is one of the factors that is
destroying the ozone layer in the atmosphere. NOx can make it hard for you to see, cause difficulty
breathing, burning of the tissues in the throat, and can cause the body to interfere with the blood's
ability to carry oxygen to the body.
There are also indoor causes of air pollution. Many household supplies can release toxic chemicals
into the air and cause air pollution. Some sources can be pollen,mold, and even some pesticides.

There are some long–term and short–term effects that some people do tend to face. Some long–term
effects from air pollution include heart disease, lung cancer and emphysema, which is a respiratory
disease. These long–term effects can last for some years or maybe even a lifetime. It can get so

Collaborators, 2016). In 2012, about 3 million deaths globally were attributed solely to ambient air
pollution, and around 87% of it occurred in low– and middle–income countries (World Health
Organization, 2016).
Whilst strong positive trend in PM concentrations are generally attributed to anthropogenic
emissions and natural biogenic emissions, it is also affected by the physical meteorology and

America, Barack Obama, is trying to pass a bill aimed at limiting CO2 emissions. If society doesn 't

A big major problem in today's world is air pollution, and it is a major cause of climate change.
Air pollution affects many thing in the world. It affects our crops, our animals, and also us people
who can suffer terribly from air pollution. People who have medical problems like lung cancer, and
asthma can die because our lungs aren't meant to take in all those toxins in our bodies, and our
bodies react in a negative way when those toxins are put into the body. Our plants and animal have
nothing to with causing air pollution and they have to suffer because of humans who are polluting
the air with carbon, and greenhouse gases. They plants could be affected which the animals eat.
Then the animals eat the plants get affected and then we eat the animals which can get everyone
sick and eventually die. If we want to live longer and stay healthy we have to get rid of air pollution.

Imagine having your life cut short by at least ten years. This is the reality for many people who
are constantly exposed to high levels of air pollution. In the midwestern United States, members
of the Teamsters Union are at a higher risk of lung cancer. These union members are truck drivers
and mechanics who simply work their hardest every day to make a living. They haul heavy
equipment or material to construction sites or warehouses. Workers may have to load and
unload equipment as well as repair any problems the vehicles have. Similar to the average
American, they work many hours a day and spend even more hours on the road driving and
hauling equipment from place to place. Their trucks are mostly diesel, which emit high levels of
carbon. "The present day levels of elemental carbon in truck cabs were slightly higher on average
than highway background but on average 4 times greater than those in residential neighborhoods
in the Midwest" (Cohen 220). A study completed by Dr. Eric Garshick consisted of 31,000
members who worked for the Teamsters Union in 1981 and showed how many deaths could be
caused by pollution. Dr. Garshick took a look at the National Death Registry in 2001 to find how
many of the members had died The results were shocking. The men in the study were all older than
thirty–nine years old who have served at least one year in the union. Smoking was taken into
