The document pitches a romance film trailer to Warner Bros. studios. It proposes a love story between two characters and notes Warner Bros.' success with similar romance genres. It describes the characters as adhering to romance genre stereotypes - the feminine, educated female and masculine male heartthrob. The storyline centers on the female character getting a job in another country, separating the couple. Research shows the target audience is young females, who will relate to the female protagonist and genre conventions like soft scene transitions, emotional music, and voiceovers are employed.
2. Genre
The genre of my trailer is going to be romance
based on a strong love story between two
characters. I would like to use your studio as
Warner Bros. studios have produced a number of
successful romance films in the past such as
‘New years Eve’ and ‘Valentines Day’. Our film
has aspects of romance, drama, conflict and
comedy and therefore will suit a wide audience.
3. Genre Research
Feminine characters
Romance trailers have characters that are typical
stereotypes of male and females. In our trailer, the
female is girly, well educated and has a managerial
position in her workplace. She shows her affection
towards her partner throughout the trailer and is
emotional during the conflicts of the relationship.
The male character is typically masculine and is a
heart throb towards our young female audience which
makes the audience invest in the characters. These
characters are typical of the leading male and female
roles in a romance film and therefore we have kept
our characters conventional.
4. Storyline
The story line is based on the idea that the
couple get separated through the female
character being offered a better job in
another country. This breaks up the
relationship and the film is based on what
happens while the two are separated from
one another.
The storyline challenges stereotypes of genre
as the female character takes the role of
following her career and being the more
career driven character. But the female
character still plays the role of a stereotypical
emotional girlfriend while the male character
entertains himself trying to fit back in with his
friends and is not as successful.
5. Audience of our film
The audience of our film is based on a young female fan
base. This is due to the age of the leading characters and
they can relate to the storyline as well as investing easily
in the characters we use.
A young female audience will be interested in our film
because the female character is a stereotypical young
female character who shares the same interests as a
young female audience which therefore a young female
audience will be able to relate to.
It is flexible towards both genders, although females will
find it more appealing. There is a range of different male
characters in the trailer and therefore the film can appeal
to both genders.
6. Using conventions
Throughout our trailer, we have used different conventions that romantic movie trailers use, n order to
make the trailer emotional and effective for the genre. Between each scene in our trailer, we have used a
soft transition effect, that dissolves/ fades into the next scene. This is conventional for genre because it is
a gentle fade that connotes femininity and it also adds to the emotional non diegetic music.
We have also used non-diegetic emotional music to reinforce the romance and drama that is involved in
the trailer. The music is over the top of the video and adds tension, romance and emotion which makes the
trailer far more effective and interesting for the audience.
During our trailer, we have used a voice over from time to time. The voice over is the lead female role in
the film and this adds an insight to the plot of the film, without giving too much away which attracts the
audience and makes them interested in the outcome of the film.
Additionally, we have added some scenes in with diegetic sound such as dialogue, which adds interest
and allows the audience to start to invest in the characters before seeing the film, which will potentially
make them want to see the film.
