This study is part of on-going action research between an Art and Design programme at the University of the West Indies with local children aged 4 – 12. This paper reports on a service learning and participatory design project undertaken between the urban university students and children from Guayaguayare, a rural beach village in Trinidad and Tobago the Southern Caribbean. This intervention was developed around a reading programme, where schools are supplied with books by an NGO that then creates fun reading ‘experiences’ around the donated books. In this specific programme, groups of children from the primary school were partnered with Design and Fine Art students of the university. The design students guided the children aged 7 – 9, through the development of their own storybooks based on the donated books. By using a design and literature-centred approach, the activity aimed to interest the children in aspects of the primary school curriculum such as reading and writing, and to help them connect with curriculum content such as language arts and mathematics, as well as introduce non-curricular aims such as building their confidence in themselves and their identities as Caribbean children. This paper analyses and documents the experiment and shares its successes and challenges, and the resulting storybooks created by the young children and their university student mentors.

This paper presents the results of an innovative conceptual framework called C2Learn [Fostering Co-Creativity in Learning through Digital Games], a European research project in Technology-Enhanced Learning. This project aims to foster co-creativity in learning through digital gaming activities. The challenge was to implement these activities in history education, which remains a subject of memorization of historical names and events. History education in Greece does not develop students’ imagination in an historical context. As such, students believe that history has nothing in relation to their lives and they face it as a given subject. In this research, students optimized teachers’ stimuli so as to develop their imagination in an historical context. Our hypotheses related to the following questions: Do students actually believe that history is a creative subject? Does this implementation give students an historical sense? Does digital gaming develop students’ imagination and afterwards their creativity? Do students acquire historical knowledge through this procedure?

483 Salika A. Lawrence | Kelly McNeal | Melda N. YildizBy using popular culture, teachers can help students engage in a variety of multimedia projects that help them make connections between reading, writing, and technology. Summer Program Helps Adolescents Merge Technology, Popular Culture, Reading, and Writing for Academic Purposes Research has documented that adolescents engage in many literacy prac- tices outside of school (Cutler, 1999; Fisher, 2003; Hinchman, Alvermann, Boyd, Brozo, & Vacca, 2003/2004; Mahiri & Sablo, 1996; Moje, 2000), where they have the choice and freedom to make their own decisions with few restrictions and opportunities to interact with a wide array of texts in different forms. Recent reports suggest that today’s adolescents have “mul- tiple literacies” (King & O’Brien, 2002) because they interact with multiple forms of nontraditional texts and different sources of information, access popular culture and mass media, and communicate with people from diverse backgrounds and perspectives through the use of new technologies (Moore, Bean, Birdyshaw, & Rycik, 1999). Adolescents’ current reliance on technol- ogy prompts a redefinition of literacy that represents a generation of youths who read less print-based text (Collier, 2007) and rely instead on visual im- ages as a means of comprehending text while sorting through a plethora of digital information, technology, and media. Although they now “read” more images, youths still need and use critical thinking skills such as exploring and critiquing the “text” when they shift through different sources of digital information. Previous research falls short of distinguishing between the technological literacy practices adolescents engage in outside of school, namely e-mailing and surfing the Web (Moore et al., 1999), and the academic and critical lit- eracy expectations identified in media and visual literacy standards, name- ly evaluating sources, synthesizing information, and using different media. These practices ref lect “21st-century literacies...[which] includes new ideas about what can be considered texts” (Collier, 2007, p. 4) and students’ interac- tions with those texts. Collier (2007) reported that students in our 21st-century context increas- ingly interact with nontraditional texts such as rap lyrics and graphic nov- els. In this context teachers have had to reexamine their classroom practices Journal of Adolescen t & Adul t L i teracy 5 2 (6) March 2 0 0 9 doi:10 .15 9 8 /JA A L . 5 2 . 6 . 3 © 2 0 0 9 In ternat ional Reading A ssociat ion (pp. 4 8 3 – 4 9 4) 484 J o u rn a l o f A d o le sc e n t & A d u lt L it e ra cy 5 2 (6 ) M a rc h 2 0 0 9 because of the increasing inf luence of technology on students’ literacy practices. Wizards are very useful for creating a good user experience. In all businesses, interactive sessions are most beneficial. To improve the user experience, wizards in Odoo provide an interactive session. For creating wizards, we can use transient models or abstract models. This gives features of a model class except the data storing. Transient and abstract models have permanent database persistence. For them, database tables are made, and the records in such tables are kept until they are specifically erased.
