Tonight's talk is “ [TITLE] ” with [NAME]. Welcome, [NAME].
Script:
Show of hands - how many are less than 2 yrs into PM; 3-7 years; 7+ years. Great! How many ICs and how many Managers?
How many of you have a career plan?
So, my talk today was inspired by a question that was posed in one of my social media groups. It read -
Any tips from the group on recruiting very senior (Staff/Principal) PMs? I have a very senior IC role open -- highly strategic, tons of impact and broad area of ownership -- but am struggling with recruiting pipeline. Not surprisingly, most folks at that level are looking to manage... which is *possible* here, but probably ~1yr out. Have any of you hit similar roadblocks? Any levels/companies/profiles have you targeted successfully?
This got me thinking.
As a senior PM, as you consider your career growth options, do you struggle with how or where to take the next step?
As a PM – one has to learn how to work with Engineering, Design and Analytics. How do you also work with Sales, Marketing, Telesales, Professional Services. As a manager you are also looking for managing and mentoring experiences.
Much like a project plan, a personal life plan, a meal-plan, a career plan is key. A career plan is also living plan and needs constant updating as our career journey takes turns in the most unexpected and interesting ways.
Job
What i learnt
My career plan
1)Our new customers needed to adopt. Our sales teams were still struggling to sell
2)And then switched back and became an IC.
1)I worked more with Sales than I had ever done before.
2)In the middle of it, covered for my PMM partner who went on maternity leave. Her team was global.
3)Promoted to a Sr D as an IC
4)Back to running a product team. Focused on product externalization building upon my learnings as a PMM and Sales partner
Feel free to speak with me and I can point you in the right direction (explain where to apply). Or you can visit www.productschool.com
