• Despite progress, deaths of children under five
remain unacceptably high
• In 2006 annual deaths among children under
five dipped below 10 million
• It is different in a developing country rather than
in an industrialized country
• Disparities persist in all regions
• The leading causes of childhood deaths
are easily prevented through simple
improvements in basic health services and
proven interventions
• Undernutrition is estimated to be an
underlying cause in more than one third of
all deaths in children under five
• There are methods that provide safe,
lifelong protection
• The second-dose coverage has reduced
global deaths from measles, surpassing
the initial target
