6. HOW TO IDENTIFY PURPOSE
Dr Ryan T Hartwig
• Identify the core outcomes
• Determine the crucial tasks your team must tackle.
• Based on those identified outcomes and tasks, engage in dialogue to
narrow and establish the team’s specific purpose
• Give everything else that doesn’t fit that purpose away.
• Increase assessment of your team’s outcomes
• Celebrate success. Then, raise the bar. Don’t rest on your laurels
8. Behaviors That Impact Performance: Activity
1. Form teams of six and move your chairs so that you are sitting in a circle.
2. Each group is a functioning work team and your goal is to work together to
identify an off-site team building event that you can all participate in
together.
3. I will provide each of you with a label; please don’t show your label to anyone.
Then turn to the person to your right and put the label on that person’s
forehead.
4. For this exercise, please respect one another’s labels.
5. Reminder: Your goal is to develop a team-building event
6. You have seven minutes as a group to work toward it.
16. Tailor Your Message
▶ Be a flexible communicator
▶ Avoid making assumptions
▶ Suspend the ego
▶ Are You Listening?
▶ Eye-contact
▶ Be present (knock, knock are you there?)
▶ Repeat the last phrase
17. Objectives: mission accomplished
✓ Identify our team purpose

others
