1. Avoid boring, predictable openings “My topic today is…”
2. Make sure the introducer gives you a great intro to establish your
credibility
3. Spice up your title - either offer a framework (7 Habits of Highly
Effective People/ 5C’s of Great Speaking) or a promise (How to
Influence People through Public Speaking) or an interesting title
(Confessions of an Audit Professional)
4. Tease them with questions at the start - 3 questions
because people remember best in threes
5. Story to illustrate pain (short - 2 minutes or less)
6. Have a Roadmap/agenda slide - explain each part of
the roadmap briefly. Maybe use questions to tease
them even more.

slide (No saying, “We’ll move to slide 1 next”)
8. Minimize text on slides. Ruthlessly cut out all words except key words
9. Use the words “Imagine” and “you” to paint a concrete scenario for
your audience…(e.g. “For those of you working in audit, you are the
second level of defence…You do this and this…For those of you in risk
mgmt., you are the third level of defence…you do this and this”).
