Don't be mistaken by the name, fig wasps are not your average wasps.
These tiny wasps, with a body length of only 2mm, spend most of their lives
inside fig fruits (syconium). The males cannot fly.
Nonetheless, these are like other wasps in playing key roles in pollination.
The difference is that the fig wasps serve only fig trees, and each species
pollinates a single species of tree. At the same time, fig trees provide
nourishment for fig wasps. The two are symbiotically and intimately
associated. Their delicate interdependency reveals the wonder of nature.

Hymenoptera. For virtually all their lives
they are with the fruit-like syconium:
from incubating, growing, pupating,
eclosion to reproduction. The male
lives inside the syconium for its whole
lifespan, while the female will leave
where it was born to lay eggs in another
syconium. As the male need not fly at
all, its wings have degenerated.
On the trunks or branches of fig
trees there are some little bulbous
shaped 'fruits'. These are in fact the
receptacles properly known as syconia.
Numerous flowers are hidden inside
the 'fruits', which are named 'figs' with
reference to the concealed flowers. As
the flowers are inside the receptacles,
ordinary butterflies, bees or birds cannot
pollinate them. The important role of
reproduction hence falls on the tiny fig
wasps.

(Ficus pyriformis)
為 例 , 銀 紋 榕 小 蜂 ( B l a s t o p h a g a

When the flowers inside the syconium
mature, a special chemical message
is released by the flowers. A small
hole opens at the tip of the syconium,
through which the chemical message
is spread to attract female fig wasps
to lay eggs. The eggs will hatch into
larvae that feed on gall flowers inside
the syconium. The larvae then pupate.
The males are the first to emerge from
the gall flowers, and mate with females
that are yet to undergo eclosion. The
male dies immediately after finishing
its responsibility of mating with the
female. The fertile female, on the other
hand, will leave the original syconium
after eclosion and lays eggs in another
syconium. As the female lays eggs, the
wasp is also pollinating the fig tree.
Also of interest, there are several
species of Ficus plants, and each has
its own specific species of fig wasp for
pollination. For example, Blastophaga
silvestriana pollinates Ficus pyriformis
and is commonly found inside its figs.
The size and timing of the opening in
the syconium matches the timing of the
specific wasp reaching maturity. The
structures of the openings and ways of
attracting the wasps are different for
the various wasp species. For untold
millenia, the fig trees and wasps have
never missed each other, and maintain
their intimate natural bonds.
