2. What is PD H PE?






Personal Development
Students will develop and understanding of the changes that
occur to the human body. Students will learn about their
physical, social, cognitive and emotional development.
Health
Making lifestyle decisions and understanding nutrition,
hygiene, the environment and disease prevention
Physical Education
The requirements for leading a balanced lifestyle and
promoting wellbeing are developed through exploring options
and learning the skills necessary for maintaining and active
lifestyle

3. Why Teach PDHPE
Obesity Prevention
“In Australia 21% of boys and 18% of girls aged 2 to 3 years are
overweight or obese (1), suggesting a need for obesity
prevention to occur during infancy”
“Friendly competition
can enhance engagement in PE teaching by focusing on
participation, self-improvement and good sportsmanship”
Physical Activity
Important health benefits of physical activity (PA) during
childhood include favourable skeletal development, improved
metabolic profile and psychological wellbeing, and an increased
likelihood of physical activity later in adulthood

4. P.D.H.P.E as part of the Primary School
Curriculum
P.D.H.P.E provides students the Knowledge,
Skills and Attitudes to achieve and maintain a
healthy lifestyle.

Knowledge of healthy and safe living is in terms
of nutrition, physical activity, positive hygiene and
safe/unsafe situation and growth and
development

Skills to perform activities and make decisions

Attitudes -students will learn to value themselves
as well as others in terms of health and fair play

5. Benefits of Learning PDHPE

Students learn to make decisions when under
pressure, think about tactics to solve problems or
win the game

Encourages students to interact within a social
group. Helps students to cope with winning and
losing. Students will learn respect for rules, each
other, coaches and umpires

Students will learn skills to participate in various
movement activities which gradually build
locomotive/non-locomotive skills
