All of Your
" Friends”

Your Name

The Tao of the Internet
If you act according to the Way (Tao),
You become one with the Way.
If you act according to the Virtue (Te)
You will become one with Virtue.
If you lose either the Way or the Virtue,
You will lose both.
-Lao Tzu
Television is a passive, solitary activity that
crowds outs out other forms of social
connections.

“Someone born in 1960
has watched
something like 50,000
hours of television
already….more than
five and half solid
years.”
Clay Shirky ~ Wired Magazine
Social Media Allows Us to be Active Participants

Explorers in a world that we observe,
modify, create and share with others.
By expanding social networks
Are the relationships authentic?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z17N_-fjvPc
Even the president has his doubts…..
"With iPods and iPads and
Xboxes and PlayStations, - none
of which I know how to work information becomes a
distraction, a diversion, a form
of entertainment, rather than a
tool of empowerment, rather
than the means of
emancipation."
President Barach Obama
Hampton University Commencement Speech
2010
YET…..
One candidate understood it better.
“tool of empowerment”
How many “Friends” are
Too Many Friends?
You just don’t have enough
hours in the day to have
meaningful online relationships
with more than this many
people.
dana boyd - Researcher at
Microsoft Research New England and a Fellow at the
Harvard Berkman Center for Internet and Society.

Boyd’s Law:

“Adding more users to a social network (site)
increases the provability that it will put you in a
awkward circumstance.”
Or the bystander effect may kick in…
Research shows, the more people,
the less willingness to help.

Will it make us smarter?

Wow ! 26,000 free books on my iPad
•

David Clark, senior research scientist at the MIT Computer Science and
Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, said in the report that 10 years from
now, “we may lose our ability to write, in the literal sense that students
are no longer taught penmanship. We will either type or print like 8-yearolds. “But I think even e-mail stimulates the putting of ideas into writing.
And while we may read only on electronic media, I think the book and the
scholarly work will survive as important means both of transferring
knowledge and of entertainment.”

•

Patrick Tucker, senior editor of The Futurist magazine, said in the report
that “Literary culture is in trouble … We are spending less time reading
books, but the amount of pure information that we produce as a
civilization continues to expand exponentially. That these trends are
linked, that the rise of the latter is causing the decline of the former, is not
impossible.
The Web Shatters Focus, Rewires Brains
http://www.wired.com/magazine/2010/05/ff_nicholas_carr/

“….the news is quite disturbing. Dozens of studies by psychologists, neurobiologists,
and educators point to the same conclusion: When we go online, we enter an
environment that promotes cursory reading, hurried and distracted thinking, and
superficial learning. Even as the Internet grants us easy access to vast amounts of
information, it is turning us into shallower thinkers, literally changing the structure of
our brain.”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXs0f5XNHjs
More Reported Findings From Article
(go to the link and read the text)
“Research continues to show that people who read linear text comprehend more,
remember more, and learn more than those who read text peppered with links.”
“Recent research suggests that links surrounded by images, videos, and advertisements
could be even worse.”
“Psychologists refer to the information flowing into our working memory as our cognitive
load. When the load exceeds our mind’s ability to process and store it, we’re unable to
retain the information or to draw connections with other memories. We can’t
memories
translate the new material into conceptual knowledge.”
“We’re exercising the neural circuits devoted to skimming and multitasking while
ignoring those used for reading and thinking deeply.”
“As we multitask online, we are “training our brains to pay attention to the crap.”
Will social media help us live longer?
Is your social network making you fat? Are your friends and family influencing
you to smoke and drink more, or to sleep less?

Can social media make us happier?

Business wants to interact with us on a personal level.

The business side of social media.

Don’t Freak Out!!
You Are in Control.
“The reality is that nothing on Facebook is really confidential.
Facebook is founded on a radical social premise -- that an
inevitable enveloping transparency will overtake modern life."
The Machine is US/ing Us
The Importance of Critical Thinking Skills
We are now actively constructing our social and
cultural worlds. We are no longer the
innocent victims or passive recipients of
media messages
“Healthy skepticism” and Critical Thinking
The active and sociable nature of new media engagement
argues for an ethnographic approach that looks at not only
the content of media but also the social practices and
contexts in which media engagement is embedded.
Networked publics differ from
traditional teen publics (such
as the mall or the school) in
some important ways. Unlike
unmediated publics,
networked publics are
characterized by their
persistence, searchability,
replicability, and invisible
audiences.

Week3exploringsocialmedia 2014 rev poll

  • 1. The Adventurer’s Society All of Your " Friends” Your Name Here
  • 2. The Tao of the Internet If you act according to the Way (Tao), You become one with the Way. If you act according to the Virtue (Te) You will become one with Virtue. If you lose either the Way or the Virtue, You will lose both. -Lao Tzu
  • 3. Television is a passive, solitary activity that crowds outs out other forms of social connections. “Someone born in 1960 has watched something like 50,000 hours of television already….more than five and half solid years.” Clay Shirky ~ Wired Magazine
  • 4. Social Media Allows Us to be Active Participants Explorers in a world that we observe, modify, create and share with others.
  • 6. Are the relationships authentic? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z17N_-fjvPc
  • 7. Even the president has his doubts….. "With iPods and iPads and Xboxes and PlayStations, - none of which I know how to work information becomes a distraction, a diversion, a form of entertainment, rather than a tool of empowerment, rather than the means of emancipation." President Barach Obama Hampton University Commencement Speech 2010
  • 8. YET….. One candidate understood it better. “tool of empowerment”
  • 9. How many “Friends” are Too Many Friends?
  • 10. You just don’t have enough hours in the day to have meaningful online relationships with more than this many people.
  • 11. dana boyd - Researcher at Microsoft Research New England and a Fellow at the Harvard Berkman Center for Internet and Society. Boyd’s Law: “Adding more users to a social network (site) increases the provability that it will put you in a awkward circumstance.”
  • 12. Or the bystander effect may kick in… Research shows, the more people, the less willingness to help.
  • 14. Will it make us smarter? Wow ! 26,000 free books on my iPad • David Clark, senior research scientist at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, said in the report that 10 years from now, “we may lose our ability to write, in the literal sense that students are no longer taught penmanship. We will either type or print like 8-yearolds. “But I think even e-mail stimulates the putting of ideas into writing. And while we may read only on electronic media, I think the book and the scholarly work will survive as important means both of transferring knowledge and of entertainment.” • Patrick Tucker, senior editor of The Futurist magazine, said in the report that “Literary culture is in trouble … We are spending less time reading books, but the amount of pure information that we produce as a civilization continues to expand exponentially. That these trends are linked, that the rise of the latter is causing the decline of the former, is not impossible.
  • 15. The Web Shatters Focus, Rewires Brains http://www.wired.com/magazine/2010/05/ff_nicholas_carr/ “….the news is quite disturbing. Dozens of studies by psychologists, neurobiologists, and educators point to the same conclusion: When we go online, we enter an environment that promotes cursory reading, hurried and distracted thinking, and superficial learning. Even as the Internet grants us easy access to vast amounts of information, it is turning us into shallower thinkers, literally changing the structure of our brain.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXs0f5XNHjs
  • 16. More Reported Findings From Article (go to the link and read the text) “Research continues to show that people who read linear text comprehend more, remember more, and learn more than those who read text peppered with links.” “Recent research suggests that links surrounded by images, videos, and advertisements could be even worse.” “Psychologists refer to the information flowing into our working memory as our cognitive load. When the load exceeds our mind’s ability to process and store it, we’re unable to retain the information or to draw connections with other memories. We can’t memories translate the new material into conceptual knowledge.” “We’re exercising the neural circuits devoted to skimming and multitasking while ignoring those used for reading and thinking deeply.” “As we multitask online, we are “training our brains to pay attention to the crap.”
  • 17. Will social media help us live longer? Is your social network making you fat? Are your friends and family influencing you to smoke and drink more, or to sleep less? READ: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/19/health/research/19stream.html?_r=1

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. "You're coming of age in a 24/7 media environment that bombards us with all kinds of content and exposes us to all kinds of arguments, some of which don't always rank all that high on the truth meter." According to Obama, "some of the craziest claims can quickly claim traction," if promoted by certain blogs and talk radio stations. "All of this is not only putting new pressures on you, it is putting new pressures on our country and on our democracy...We can't stop these changes...But we can adapt to them...Education [can] fortify you, as it did earlier generations, to meet the tests of your own time," he added.
