Unit Introduction
The aim of this unit is to enable learners to develop skills in the production of two-dimensional graphic narratives and apply
sequential art effectively through an understanding of the principles of character, dialogue, and plot by means of visual
storytelling.
Learners will develop transferable skills which could be applied across a vast area of visual communications such as film,
television, photographic applications, animation, computer graphics and print media.
Context/Summary of Assignment:
Ferguson are independent publishers who are looking for a new member of their design team. There will be a range of
duties including designing book covers. They also want to start a new range of books based on fairy tales to break in to
the children’s market. As the stories are public domain, they represent a good way for smaller companies to gain a
foothold in the market. This will allow them to generate the revenue required to develop their own original stories.
In order to apply for the position, you will need to investigate digital production methods, prove you can use a range of
different methods, refine your style and working practices and produce the pages for a book.
The publisher wants to see how you develop work as well as your final products. You will present your work digitally via a
blog. This will allow the publisher to choose candidates for an interview.

Tasks to be carried out:

Individually you need to complete a series of processes that use a variety of hand, mechanical and digital techniques to
construct story elements and narratives. These images need to show creativity and flair as well as demonstrating your
ability to use different techniques.

To help you produce ideas and designs for graphic narrative to a technical quality that reflects near professional
standards, showing creativity and flare and working independently, you should research existing products to help form
your own ideas. You should concentrate on :
Visual style (bright, muted, busy, quiet, hand draw, simple, textured, plain, cartoon, realistic…)
Layout of text and images
Fonts and text per page
Author, illustrator, publisher
Number of pages and page size

Generate ideas for your chosen product based on your story. This should include mood boards, mind mapping and may
include additional notes and sketches. Recording you ideas is important. Include documentation of all the ideas you have
had.
Complete a proposal sheet for you project. It will include dimensions, file format information, a brief summary of your story,
and an explanation of production methods. You should explain who the audience will be.

Present your idea generation and proposal to your peers to receive feedback. You will also provide feedback to your
peers. You will then produce some reflection on your feedback.
Task 5: Unit 55 P1 M1 D1Produce a script and a flat plan for your product. Showing evidence of drafting will improve your
grade. This will help you work out the words that will appear and the images you will need to create.
Producing a detailed plan of how your product will be laid out. You should map out your pages so that you are clear which
images and text will appear. This work will provide you with a template to work in when you start production.
