Is a Reflection of ?!!!!!
 Non verbal cues are the reflection of our Unconscious
and Subconscious Mind.
 Freud’s theory of the unconscious.
 Making it the reflection of conscious mind is the art
and simultaneously mastering the non verbal comm.
History: Review of Literature
 Researches revealed the dominance of non-verbal
message over verbal message
(Mehrabian, 1967; Blatner 2005).
 Developing high levels of rapport with individuals. In fact,
psychologists assert that non-verbal communication plays a
significant role in developing and judging levels of
rapport
(Grahe & Bemieri, 1999; Tickle-Degnen & Rosenthal, 1987).
 Research has established that these non-verbal categories
play a significant role in instructional delivery
(Kleinfield, 1972; Bancroft 1995; Albers, 2001; Susan, 2002; Dam, 2005; Keidar
2005)
 This review of literature has also identified the components
of non-verbal communication and its significance.; Non-
verbal communication techniques are complex and are
further divided into the categories of proxemics,
oculesics, haptics, ehronemics, kinesics,
paralanguage, artifacts, olfatics, posture and
appearance
(Hall, 1969; Hodge, 1971; Bowers & Flinders, 1990; Burgoon & Hoobler, 2002;
Hargie & Dickson, 2004; Blatner, 2005).
Thus the review of literature tells us the
Developments in Research and Results in the field of
non verbal communication.
Body Language
‘Kinesics’ that literally means ‘body
movement’.
When people don't know whether to believe what they
are hearing/what they are seeing they judge them by
their body language.

Importance of body language
 It helps in dealing with relationship problems at
work/home
 In CORPORATE it centres theme “power” and power
gives one status conscious (can be seen at meetings or while
appraising the employee).
Status manifests itself certainly in a posture and way
of interacting

FACIAL EXPRESSIONS
Face is the index of the heart.
 Corners of lips.
 The position of the eyebrows.
 The cheeks – whether drawn up or back or drooping
the jaw.
 Nose/nostrils and the chin.
ACTIVITY 1 : MAKE THE FACES
Eye contact
EYES NEVER TELL LIES.
 Eyes are the most difficult of the body to get control
of it consciously.
 Eyes along with the eyebrows, eyelids & size of pupils
convey our innermost feeling.

Gestures are the physical movements of ….

Body
These can be segregated into 3 types :
 Ectomorph: thin youthful and tall
 Mesomorph :strong, athletic, muscular, and body.
 Endomorph: fat, round & soft.
Bodily impression can be compensated by strengthening
there other non verbal cues.
Posture
 Leaning forward or backward,
 standing or sitting erect ,
 slouching haphazardly or bending sideways
all these posture make an immediate
impression on the other person’s mind.
Appearance
Appearance means the way we dress present
our self in terms of
 Clothing
• Hair
• Jeweller
• Cosmetics
In Industry, dress speaks volumes about the
attitude to life, to work, to his colleagues and his own
feelings.
Effective use of body language
 Mind the body-talk
 Keep shoulder squared while sitting and weight balanced
on both feet at least while standing.
 Be Careful with the handshake
 Represents status and concern for the person.
 Convey power and confidence.
 Establish good eye contact( for you be taken seriously)
 Communicate at the level of the person before you by
holding your body accordingly egg. a junior to senior.
 Be yourself. If you are comfortable with yourself

Advantages of Ideal body language
 It is a visible communication .
 Helps the receiver of the message in decoding the
actual message.
 Body language complements verbal communication
 Body Language goes a long way to improve the
overall atmosphere egg. by establishing discipline.
Limitation of body language
 Cannot be wholly relied on.
 Chance of misinterpretation.
 It require extra care in getting the right message.
 It is effective in large gathering but not VALUABLE.
PARALANGUAGE
The word Para Means “like” like language.
Para linguistics is a systematic study of how a speaker
verbalizes.
Paralanguage depends of certain aspects:
 Voice
 Word Stress
 Mixed Signals
Voice
 There are all kinds of voices like musical, raucus ,
cultivated, pleasant/unpleasant and so on. The clearer the
voice more effective it can be.
 Effective voice may depends upon certain aspect
 Pitch variation
 Speaking speed
 Pause
 Non-fluencies
 Volume variation
Pitch variation
 Its necessary to catch the listener's attention and to
keep him interested in us.
 Observe others way of speaking egg monotones,
authoritative etc.
 It has also a lot to do with one’s state of mind.
Speaking speed and Pauses
 Fluency in a language is not the same we thing as the
speed of speaking.
 General rule for speaking speed is that easy parts of a
message should be spoken at a brisk pace because it
is likely to be understood easily.
Non fluencies
 They maybe effective by inviting the listener’s
attention or by giving a nonverbal edge to the verbal
communication.
 They are called ‘non-fluencies’. Eg. ‘right’, ‘ok’, ‘fine’,
‘aa’, ‘umm’ etc.
Volume variation
 It should be audible enough to reach out to all the
audience .
 It should be adjusted according to the size of our
audience.
 Volume variation puts life into our speaking
Proper word stress
 By putting stress or emphasis on a word in the same
sentence or utterance we can change the whole
meaning.
 Fr e.g.
 Conduct : person’s behaviour in a particular place
 Conduct : to organise or to do a particular activity .
 Accent (noun) : distinctive way of pronouncing a
language
 Accent (verb): to Emphasize
Word signals
 It should be our constant effort to make sure that the
“what” and How” of our message are in harmony saying
one thing in one way and using words that convey
opposite meaning.
 Receiver should concentrate on how the message is
sent and the meaning of its words.
eg. Job is assigned to someone else
Can be interpreted as – you are inappropriate or you
cannot do this or may be you are relieved of some
burden etc.

 Machine assembling and operating instructions
 Direction indicators

 Tourist or guest friendly signs

Sound or Audio Signals

Advantages of Audio Visual
 Interesting and more expressive.
 They have an Educational value for eg: Instructions
operating a machine , adopting safety measures,
Maintaining cleanliness, etc.
 Effective mode of Advertisement because they
immediately attract attention.
 Sounds signals are very quick and timely in
conveying the intended message. Eg: Sirans ,hooters
Limitation of Sign Language
 Can communicate only elementary and simple
message.
 It requires great skills on the part of artist to produce
and create such signals.
Space Language
 Proxemics is a study of how we communicate with
the space around us.
 Our interaction with the people around us has rather
a well define or well understood spatial dimension.
 It plays an important role in telling us about our
relations & the nature of communication with others.

 Showing, What “TIME” means to us.

Job is assigned to someone else Can be interpreted as – you are inappropriate or you cannot do this or may be you are relieved of some burden etc.
