ASTRACT
Structural design is the primary aspect of civil engineering. The very basis of construction of
any building, residential house or dams, bridges, culverts, canals etc.is designing.
The foremost basic in structural engineering is the design of simple basic components and
members of a building viz. slabs, beam, columns and footings for their design, an
architectural design is prepared using the auto CAD . in order to design them it is important to
first obtain the plan of the particular building that is positioning of the particular rooms such
that they serve their respective purpose and suitability. Plan layout of beam and the position
of columns are fixed. Thereafter, the vertical loads are calculated namely the dead load and
live load from IS: 875
In this project the design of G+5 floors hostel building is done according to the Indian
standards IS456 has been used for the reinforcement design IS 875 has been used for the
estimation of all the loads on the structure viz. dead load, live load, and wind load, once the
loads are obtained, the slabs are designing of slabs depends upon whether it is one way or
two way slab the end conditions and the loading the analysis and designing of beam &
columns are done by the “STAAD PRO” software tool. The footing are designed manually
after completion of designing estimation has to be carried out.

FOUNDATION
Footings are strips of concrete or filled concrete blocks placed under foundation wall. Gravel
or crushed stone footings may also be used. The purpose of footing is to transfer the loads
safely in the ground.
1.IsolatedFooting-
An isolated footing is used to support the load on a single column. It is usually either square
or rectangular in plan. It represents the simplest, most economical type and most widely used
footing. Whenever possible, square footings are provided so as to reduce the bending
moments and shearing forces at their critical sections. Isolated footings are used in case of
light column loads, when columns are not closely spaced.
Image3: of isolated column
2.combinedfooting:-
A footing which has more than one column is called as combined footing. This kind of
footing is adopted when there is a limited space. Due to lack of space we cannot cast
individual footing, Therefore footings are combined in one footing.

Brick masonry-
The common materials of masonry construction are brick, building stone such
as marble, granite, travertine, and limestone, cast stone, concrete block, glass block, and cob.
Masonry is generally a highly durable form of construction.

FORM WORK
Formwork is a mould or die used to support or shape the concrete until it attains sufficient
strength to carry its self-weight. Formwork holds the concrete until it hardens to required
shape & size.
Significance of formwork-
A-Formwork constitutes 30% of cost & 60% of time in concrete construction.
B-Quality of concrete finish and soundness of concrete depends very much on type of
formwork system.
C-Desired shape of concrete is not possible if formwork is not done properly.
D-Formwork should be properly designed fabricated and erected to receive concrete.
E-Accident happen because of faulty formwork and scaffolding or staging.
Safety in using formwork-
-Components are light in weight for manual holding.
-Appropriate use of tools.
-Loose or hanging components are minimal.

REINFORCEMENT PLACEMENT AND CASTING OF SLAB
At there I was involved while placement of reinforcement bar for monolithic construction of
concrete slab with beam.
Reinforcement in the slab with alternate bent up bars provided at supports in order to provide
negative reinforcement at support in two way slab In concreting, concrete pump, needle
vibrator etc. were used

Image 10: in next day of slab casting
Technology used
Generally at site survey is carried out by following two instruments
: Auto level
: Total station
Other instruments are use in casting
: Mixer
: niddle vibretor
: pumping machine
A-Total Station A total station is an electronic/optical instrument used in modern Surveying
and building construction. The total station is an electronic theodolite (Transit) integrated
with an electronic distance meter (EDM) to read slope Distances from the instrument to a
particular point. By this instrument we can Measure Angle, Distance, Coordinate and also
Data Processing.
16. Page 16
Advantages: The following are some of the major advantages of using total station over the
conventional surveying instruments
1. Field work is carried out very fast.
2. Accuracy of measurement is high.
3. Manual errors involved in reading and recording are eliminated.
B-Auto level- It is a leveling instrument which was on site checking the elevations of various
points.
Auto level is a modified form of dumpy level. We used auto level to transfer the level of
ground to retaining wall and setting thickness of slab in which first of all marking was made
to fix the level of particular elevations then casting of slab was performed
Transferring of surface level to retaining wall
1 – Set the auto level at the building floor level.
2 – level the instrument
3 – Take the staff reading at point also on floor level surface.
4 – Locate the staff on the formwork of retaining wall and adjust the staff in such a way so
that reading of staff is same as staff reading in step 3.
Image 11: transfer the concrete and use of niddle vibrator
17. Page 17
Grinding machine-
This the power mechanically operated machine which is used to mix the concrete.it consist of
a hollow cylindrical part with wing inside it.in which cement, sand, aggregate and water is
mixed
Transportation-
The Process of carrying the concrete mixture from the place of its mixing to
final position of deposition is transportation.
Method of transportation -
1. transport of concrete by pan
2. transport of concrete by wheel barrow
3. transport of concrete by T.M.
4. transport of concrete by tipping lorries
5. transport of concrete by pumps
6. transport of concrete by belt conveyors
At this site transit mixture(T.M.) are using
Image 12 : transit mixture at site
18. Page 18
Batching Plant-
concrete plant, also known as a batch plant or batching plant or a concrete batching plant, is
equipment that combines various ingredients to form concrete. Some of these inputs
include water, air, admixtures, sand, aggregate (rocks, gravel, etc.), fly ash, silica fume, slag,
and cement
Image 13 : batching plant and machine
Tower Crane- The tower cranes belong to essential building machines which are widely
used for transport of the construction products from storage area or vehicle to their final
positions in process of building-up of the constructions. Their positioning affects a fluency,
costs and total consumed time of building-up.

QUALITY:-
The technical audit of works done by CPWD used to be done in-house right from its
inception. The functions of Quality Assurance and Technical Audit of works were shifted to
CVC in the year 1964. On the recommendation of Ranganathan Committee, the Quality
Assurance functions were again shifted to CPWD in the year 1979.
The implementation of Quality Assurance in the field will require close co-operation among
the three agencies, namely
(a) field engineers
(b) the construction agency
(c) the Quality Assurance team at Circle level for strict compliance of Quality Assurance
Procedure forming part of agreement.
Quality Control team at Circle Level
To keep a watch on the effectiveness/adequacy of Quality Assurance measures at site, a
Quality Assurance team with SE of the circle as its head and comprising of one AE.
The functions of the Quality Assurance team at Circle level are to check the compliance of
Quality Assurance system by the field units, to locate the lapse/deficiency in the
implementation of the Quality Assurance Plan, and to guide the field engineers in quality
related aspects of the work
Quality Assurance units in the Regions
Quality Assurance works in various Regions are being looked after by the Regional QA units
headed by the Superintending Engineer (TLQA) or Director Works of the Region

SAFETY INDUCTION
Safety is very important part of any work. An induction video was showed which highlighted
the need and importance of safety at construction site. Most accidents can be prevented by
taking simple measures or adopting proper working procedures. It is very important to
discuss issues on safety and health that should be paid attention to on construction sites for
easy reference by the workers. If we work carefully and take appropriate safety measures,
there will definitely be fewer work injury cases, and our sites will become a safe and secure
place to work in. It is important to educate everyone in the site regarding safety for following
purposes.

CONCLUSION
The provision of summer training as the curriculum of undergraduate technical courses is a
very appreciable step which I consider as a great opportunity to see real life application of
materials which we have already studied and seen in our textbooks or our day to day life.
The opportunity to work at a location with such an organization was really a great experience
and fun .
There were several things to learn and experience. Learning to apply the studied concepts and
phenomena was really enjoyable .
Various things which couldn’t have been possible theoretically were possible to be learnt .
Interaction with workers and and local public was also a great experience.
All over the whole process was a memorable one and quite informative .
