The greenhouse effect occurs when greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, and methane, absorb and emit thermal radiation from the Earth's surface, trapping heat and warming the planet. While some level of greenhouse gases are natural, human activities like burning fossil fuels have increased their atmospheric concentrations and enhanced the greenhouse effect, causing global temperatures to rise. This warming effect has disadvantages such as changes to climate and weather patterns. The main natural sources of greenhouse gases are respiration, volcanoes, and wetlands, while human sources include fossil fuel combustion, agriculture, and deforestation.
