What is Business Intelligence ?
The next generation of business solutions with integrated intelligence is here and it will
focus on the business user putting the personal "I" in "IT" as never before which will read

Business intelligence & data warehousing

Often BI applications use data gathered from a data warehouse or a data mart. However, not all data warehouses are used for busi-
ness intelligence, nor do all business intelligence applications require a data warehouse.

Business intelligence refers to systems and technologies that provide the business with the means for decision-makers to extract
personalized meaningful information about their business and industry, not typi-
cally available from internal systems alone. This includes advanced decision sup-
port tools and back-room systems and databases to support those tools. The
data warehouse is that back-room database. Combine that with the support
tools required to build and maintain the data warehouse, such as data cleansing
and extract, transform and load tools and you have what many call data ware-
                                                       housing.

Think of the data warehouse as the back office and business intelligence as the entire business including the back office. The busi-
ness needs the back office on which to function, but the back office without a business to support, makes no sense

Business intelligence and business analytics

Business intelligence should be divided into querying, reporting, OLAP, an "alerts" tool, and business analytics. Querying, reporting,
OLAP always gives you real time data information. Business analytics makes extensive use of these datas, statistical and quantita-
tive analysis, explanatory and predictive modeling , and fact-based management to drive decision making. Analytics may be used as
input for human decisions or may drive fully automated decisions. Business intelligence is querying, reporting, OLAP, and "alerts". In
other words, querying, reporting, OLAP, and "alert" tools can answer the questions: what happened; how many, how often, where;
where exactly is the problem; what actions are needed. Business analytics can answer the questions: why is this happening; what if
these trends continue; what will happen next (that is, predict); what is the best that can happen (that is, optimize).

 Getting Business Intelligence projects prioritized
It is often difficult to provide a positive business case for Business Intelligence (BI) initiatives and often the projects will need to be
prioritized through strategic initiatives. Here are some hints to increase the benefits for a BI project.

    • You must determine the tangible benefits such as eliminated cost of producing legacy reports.

    • Enforce access to data for the entire organization. In this way even a small benefit, such as a few minutes saved, will make a
difference when it is multiplied by the number of employees in the entire organization.

    • Consider letting the BI project be driven by other business initiatives with excellent business cases. To support this approach,
the organization must have Enterprise Architects, which will be able to detect suitable business projects.

  • 3. Business Intelligence :: Continued Business intelligence & data warehousing Often BI applications use data gathered from a data warehouse or a data mart. However, not all data warehouses are used for busi- ness intelligence, nor do all business intelligence applications require a data warehouse. Business intelligence refers to systems and technologies that provide the business with the means for decision-makers to extract personalized meaningful information about their business and industry, not typi- cally available from internal systems alone. This includes advanced decision sup- port tools and back-room systems and databases to support those tools. The data warehouse is that back-room database. Combine that with the support tools required to build and maintain the data warehouse, such as data cleansing and extract, transform and load tools and you have what many call data ware- housing. Think of the data warehouse as the back office and business intelligence as the entire business including the back office. The busi- ness needs the back office on which to function, but the back office without a business to support, makes no sense Business intelligence and business analytics Business intelligence should be divided into querying, reporting, OLAP, an "alerts" tool, and business analytics. Querying, reporting, OLAP always gives you real time data information. Business analytics makes extensive use of these datas, statistical and quantita- tive analysis, explanatory and predictive modeling , and fact-based management to drive decision making. Analytics may be used as input for human decisions or may drive fully automated decisions. Business intelligence is querying, reporting, OLAP, and "alerts". In other words, querying, reporting, OLAP, and "alert" tools can answer the questions: what happened; how many, how often, where; where exactly is the problem; what actions are needed. Business analytics can answer the questions: why is this happening; what if these trends continue; what will happen next (that is, predict); what is the best that can happen (that is, optimize). Getting Business Intelligence projects prioritized It is often difficult to provide a positive business case for Business Intelligence (BI) initiatives and often the projects will need to be prioritized through strategic initiatives. Here are some hints to increase the benefits for a BI project. • You must determine the tangible benefits such as eliminated cost of producing legacy reports. • Enforce access to data for the entire organization. In this way even a small benefit, such as a few minutes saved, will make a difference when it is multiplied by the number of employees in the entire organization. • Consider letting the BI project be driven by other business initiatives with excellent business cases. To support this approach, the organization must have Enterprise Architects, which will be able to detect suitable business projects.
