• Enjoys being spontaneous and going on adventures
• Loves hipster music and values experiences and memories over expensive, material objects
Background:
Sean and Catherine recently got engaged on the reality TV show, “The Bachelor.” They fell in love while in Thailand, and
the country holds a special place in their hearts. They are a young, free-spirited couple who lives a carefree, fun and
adventurous life. They are focusing on their engagement but plan to have kids in the next five years.
Their style is hip, young, urban, semi-upscale and modern. They like to laugh and have fun together, so the space shouldn’t
be too serious. At the same time, they look forward to maturing together, so there should be areas in the penthouse for
them to “mature” together. They’re both very close with their families, so there should be sufficient space for friends and
family to come over and socialize.

3. CLIENT NEEDS PENTHOUSE SITE DETAILS
• Kitchen – should be an open, large kitchen that can accommodate guests when Sean has recently bought a penthouse property at the Aronson Building, located
cooking. This space should also have a bar area for the couple to eat at if they’re at 750 Mission Street in San Francisco, California. The new penthouse space is two
having a romantic night in stories high, and has retail shops located on the ground level floor. The remaining
• Pantry – they love to cook, it should be big levels are standard condominiums. Below are the existing plans for the space.
• Dining Room – should be a separate room for entertaining guests
• Guest Living Room – should be near the kitchen, and meant to be a place for
guests to socialize
• Casual Living Room – a more casual living room for snuggling up and watching
TV
• Upstairs Lounge Area – this is a more intimate space than the entertainment
room. It should be low-key, comfortable and relaxed
• Laundry Room – standard size
• Mud Room – they need this at the entrance, since they love outdoor activities
• Master Bedroom with walked-in closet – should be mature, yet still playful style
• Master Bath – with a his/her sink
• 3 Guestrooms – to accommodate visiting friends/family and to convert into a
kid’s room in the future
• 2 Offices – one for Sean since he is an entrepreneur and one for Catherine if she
works from home
• Gym Area – a place for Sean or Catherine to workout, maybe include a rock
climbing wall
• Yoga Area – an indoor or outdoor area to do yoga or relax
• Barbecue Area – provide an outdoor space where Sean can have friends over
and grill

4. CONCEPT STATEMENT LIFESTYLE & MOOD BOARD
My concept for this penthouse is centered on Sean and Catherine’s history. The two Lifestyle
fell in love while traveling in Thailand. Right off the bat, Sean couldn’t resist Catherine’s
thirst for learning new things and exploring new, different cultures. Catherine describes
herself as a weird, “quirky” girl who loves to play and have fun. With this history in
mind, I decided to focus this space on the Asian traditions and cultural norms they
experienced while traveling in Asia on The Bachelor. This includes patterns, shapes,
colors, textures and materials from various Asian countries, to include Thailand, Japan,
Indonesia, Morocco, India and even Saudi Arabia. My concept is also based around
Catherine’s quirky, eccentric personality, so I plan to mix and match various materials,
emphasizing her playful, “weird” or “non-conventional” approach to life.

5. LEVEL 1 FLOOR PLAN
The first level of the penthouse is meant to
excite both the inhabitants as well as outside
visitors. When Sean and Catherine met, they
would try and sneak off to small, private
intimate “nooks” away from the public.
These small, intimate spaces are replicated
throughout the first floor.
Upon entering the space, the user is greeted
with a dramatic Asian-inspired indoor pagoda.
The pagoda is two stories, and users can
choose to lounge on the bottom level or the
top level.
Both Sean and Catherine each have their own
office, as well as a secret hangout spot for the
couple to sneak away from reality. The kitchen
is expansive with a large pantry, and there
is also a buffet seating area for more casual
dining. In a more formal setting, users can sit
at the formal dining table.
Outside, there is a barbecue area, a hot tub,
sun bathing chairs, a separate yoga space and
dog play area.
The use of vibrant colors and eclectic patterns
represent the young couple’s energetic
personalities.

6. LEVEL 2 FLOOR PLAN
The second level of the
penthouse is mostly occupied
by bedrooms. There are three
guest bedrooms and one master
bedroom.
The path from the guest
bedrooms to the pagoda to the
master bedroom is meant to
replicate the feeling of a Thai
bridge.
Each bedroom has an eclectic,
fun and colorful vibe, again,
representing the youthful,
carefree energy of Sean and
Catherine.

7. PERSPECTIVE SKETCH - MAIN ENTRY
This perspective sketch shows
the pagoda as the user enters
the penthouse. The pagoda is
inspired by Japanese and Thai
design elements.
The sharp shapes and
symmetrical elements in the
pagoda are commonly found in
Asian designs.
Catherine always says she’s, “a
little bit weird” and she’s “not
sure how Sean fell in love with
her quirky personality.” This
quirky personality is reflected in
the staircase, where each step is a
different color and pattern.
The varying patterns on each
step also represents the different
“milestones” they will take as
a couple. Each step is a new,
distinct lesson and memory as a
newly-wed couple.

8. PERSPECTIVE SKETCH - INSIDE THE TOP LEVEL OF PAGODA
This is a perspective drawing of
the interior upstairs space in the
pagoda.
It’s a small, quaint little space, but
a great, fun and different place to
hang out when the user wants to
get a view of all that’s happening
on the first floor.
There are also a couple of tables
and chairs if he/she wants to relax
and chat.

9. PERSPECTIVE SKETCH - KITCHEN AREA
The kitchen will be one of the
most popular areas for the
couple, as Catherine loves to
write about food.
Because the couple plans to
spend so much time in the
kitchen, I decided to go with a
more modern, simple and clean
design. The shapes and materials
are simple and durable. The
counter tops are made of black
granite and the cabinetry is made
of teak wood.
The choice in teak wood was
inspired by the Indonesian,
Malaysian and Thai cultures,
which are all places Sean and
Catherine enjoy visiting.

10. PERSPECTIVE SKETCH - MASTER BEDROOM
This is the master bedroom. Sean
and Catherine wanted a space
that was mature, yet still playful
at the same time.
As mentioned before, the couple
loves to travel and loves learning
about new cultures. There are
several different keepsake pieces
that represent the different
cultures they are interested in.
The India-inspired bed frame,
Egyptian mirror art, Thai-inspired
wall paper, Japanese wall sconces
and classic chandelier are all
reminders of their love to travel.

11. PERSPECTIVE SKETCH - EXTERIOR DOG RUN
Sean has two dogs that he and
Catherine absolutely adore. It was
important that their two dogs
have a safe, fun and spacious area
to live as well.
Juxtapose Sean and Catherine’s
offices, there is a large dog run
with two dog houses. There is
also a double glass door from
Catherine’s office that allows easy
access to their pet’s home.
This drawing shows a bit of
Catherine’s office, where there
are two swings for users to hang
out as she works. Catherine loves
to play and loves being “weird”
so the swings were a great, quirky
way to represent her personality.
