2. “Education” and “Library” are two indivisible concepts, fundamentally related to and co-existent
with each other. Library education means educating students to be qualified librarians or information
scientists through organized instruction and training.
According to UNESCO the goal of library education is to develop professionals who are qualified to
established, manage, operate, and evaluate user-oriented information systems and services. In addition
the program should to familiarize students with the role of information in society and make them fully
aware of sources of information and develop skills for exploring these sources.
Library Education in Bangladesh: The library and information science education in Bangladesh began in
1952 when its London-trained Librarian, Mr. Fazal Elahi, introduced a 3-month training course for the
library staff at the Dhaka University Library. Consequently the Department of Library and Information
Science at Dhaka University came into being in 1959 which is now one of the most prominent institution
for receiving higher degree in the discipline.
Master of Philosophy (M. Phil.): Master of Philosophy (M. Phil.) program in library science was approved
by the Dhaka University during the 1974-75 session but it commenced in the session 1976-77. It started
the two-year M. Phil. Program with course work. One year is for course work and another year is for
thesis. The students of the dept. of information science and library management who have secured 55%
marks or CGPA 3.5 in their Master’s program can apply to enroll in the M. Phil. They will have to appear
at the written test and face a viva voce to be enrolled in M. Phil.
Doctor of Philosophy Ph. D.): The Doctor of Philosophy program in library science was approved by
Dhaka University during the session 1978-1979 and began the doctoral program in 1979. In the Ph. D.
program ‘no coursework’ is required for the Ph. D. candidates but generally works on a thesis-topic with
an advisor for two to four years.
Annotated Bibliography of the M. Phil. and Ph. D. Thesis on Information Science and Library
Management: An annotated bibliography is a list of literary documents, containing an entry of the
selected bibliographical information (i. e. author name, title, place, institution’s name, pagination) of
that document along with the brief annotation.
Here we prepared an annotated bibliography of the M. Phil. and Ph. D. thesis on Information science
and Library Management that are available in the Dhaka University Central Library and the seminar
library of the Department of Information Science and Library Management. The entries are made by the
author’s name and are arranged alphabetically letter-by-letter.

12. Logical Partition of the M. Phil. and Ph. D. Research:
The word ‘research’ is composed of two words “re” and “search”, which means to search
again, or to search for new facts or to modify older ones in any branch of knowledge.
Actually research is simply the process of arriving at dependable solutions to problems
through the planned and systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of data. (Mouly,
1994, p.4)
Kinds of Research: We may recognize the following kinds of research:
Pure/Basic Research
Applied Research
Action Research
Besides these there may be other kinds of research (i. e. academic research, empirical research,
exploratory research, qualitative research, quantitative research, etc.)
These kinds of research are briefly described here;
Pure Research – it is concerned with elucidating concepts and their relations, hypotheses,
ultimately leading to development of theories.
Applied Research – It adapts the theories, developed through pure research to the solution of
problems.
Action research – It focuses on the immediate application.
Academic Research – It is conducted for the achievement of a higher academic degree.
Empirical Research – It is a way of gaining knowledge by means of direct and indirect
observation or experience.
Exploratory Research – It is conducted for a problem that has not clearly defined as yet or its
real scope is yet unclear.
Quantitative Research – It is a research concerned with the measurement of attitudes,
behaviors and perceptions and includes interview method.
Qualitative Research – It is a research undertaken to gain insights concerning attitudes, beliefs,
motivations and behaviors of individuals to explore a social or human problem and include
methods such as focus groups, case studies, observation and in-depth interviews.
13. Considering the above parameters we can claim that all the M. Phil. and Ph. D. research listed
above are academic research. Because they are conducted for the achievement of a academic
degree.
Further Partition: By appraising the list of Ph. D. thesis we can say that about 11 of the 17
research is pure research. Because these entire projects proposed a model for the system they
dealt with. As it is mentioned earlier that if any research develop a theory then it will be pure
research. So we can claim that our perception will be logically acceptable.
The rest of the Ph. D. researches are empirical research. Because they revealed their findings by
means of observation or experience. They can also be called quantitative research, as they used
to handle a lot of data to conduct their research.
If we scan the list of M. Phil. researches we can find that two of the seven researches are
pure research. Because they developed a theory for the system they were consulted. While the
research conducted by Shahina Sultana seems to be an exploratory research as she explored
something that is relatively new in our field. The rest of the researches are empirical research
as they are based on some observation.
Conclusion: This assignment is prepared by a group of students of 4th year 7th semester,
Department of Information Science and Library Management, University of Dhaka as a part of
their course work. It will be submitted to the course teacher. He will justify the work.
