5. Culture of India
• India’s languages, religions, music, art, architecture, food
and customs differ from place to place within the country,
but nevertheless possesses a commonality and are in
harmony with each other.
• The culture of India is an amalgamation of these diverse
sub-cultures spread over the entire sub-continent and
traditions that are several millennia old.
• Indian traditions date back to 8000 BC and it has a
continuous recorded history since the time of the Vedas
for over 5500 years

14. Early History
The Seven Islands of Bombay (Mumbai)
• The City originally consisted of seven
islands namely Colaba, Little Colaba (AKA -
Old Women's Island), Bombay, Mazagoan-
Wadala, Mahim, Parel and Matunga-Sion
• These islands were joined in one land mass
after a series of land reclamations into what
is now modern Mumbai.
• The name Bombay is derived from “Bom
Baia” which in Portuguese means “Good
Bay”
• The original inhabitants, the Kolis called the
area “Mumba” after Mumbadevi, the Hindu
deity.
• This is the origin of the name Bombay and
later Mumbai
15. Mumbai – a support to Indian commerce
• Mumbai is ideally placed to become the center of trade and
commerce in India due to the fusion of every Indian ethnic group.
• English and Hindi are the naturally spoken languages in Mumbai
• Ease of communication thus makes Mumbai a natural magnet for
International commerce
• The cities of Pune and Bangalore are a natural support base to
Mumbai with the high level of Information Technology development.

16. Infrastructure Development
• Infrastructure development is keeping pace with the evolving
needs of the city.
• The government is enhancing the heavily loaded transport
system with Flyover roads and overhead Mono Rail systems.
• The Mumbai port has the largest container terminal in India
and coupled with the excellent rail and highway system
connecting Mumbai to every city in India it is the natural hub
for movement of goods across the country
• Under the shanty town redevelopment program large areas
are released for housing development.
• Within a couple of years Mumbai will have shaken off its
transport and infrastructure stranglehold and will rival the best
