For many years Capistrano has been the defacto deployment tool, but many organisations have yet to realise the benefits of automating their deployment process. Automated Deployments are fast, less error prone, easier to rollback and you can dish out the keys to other team members so anyone can deploy. During this talk we’ll look at how to “capify” a simple PHP project and deploy it in a few minutes. And, as Capistrano is a “remote server automation and deployment tool”, we’ll also look at some of the other things Capistrano can do for you such as restarting apache or grepping server log (and more). We’ll also take a look at the various plug-ins available and see how easy it can be to write your own. If you are deploying using ssh / git pull / apache restart? Then it’s time to make a change: automate all the things and live in a world of “repeatable success”.

The perl on most linux distros is a mess. Docker makes it easier to build and packge a local perl and applications. Problem is that Docker's manuals produce a mess of their own. Distributing perl on top of Gentoo's stage3 distro, busybox, or nothing at all made good alternatives. This talk includes basics of setting up docker, building a local perl for it, and packaging perl or applications into images for use in containers.

Logical Volume Management ("LVM") on linux looks like a complicated mess at first. The basics are not all that hard, and some features like mirroring, dynamic space management, snapshots for stable backups, mirroring, and over-provisioning via thin volumes can save a lot of time and effort.

In this day and age, time is money—both for website developers and site visitors. Page load times can be the difference that impacts search engine rankings, ad revenue, and overall sales. Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) will cut the load time of assets between 20-50%, especially for users outside of the United States which amounts to an improved customer experience. By speeding up CDNs, with geographically distributed servers, you can help deliver the fastest possible download for all users. In the past, CDNs were cost prohibitive and mostly reserved for sizable organizations who could afford to pay thousands of dollars per month. Recently, there has been an overall shift in CDNs that even the lowest traffic web sites can afford.

Varnish is a caching proxy usually used for high profile Drupal sites. However, configuring Varnish is not an easy task that requires a lot of work. It is even more difficult when it comes to creating a scalable cluster of Varnish nodes. Fortunately, there is a solution. I’ve been working on kube-httpcache project (https://github.com/mittwald/kube-httpcache) that takes care of many things such as routing, scaling, broadcasting, config-reloading, etc... If you need to run more than one instance of Varnish, this session is for you. You will learn how to: * Launch a single instance of Varnish in Kubernetes. * Configure Varnish for Drupal. * Scale Varnish from 1 to N nodes as part of the cluster. * Make your Varnish cluster resilient. * Reload Varnish configs on the fly. * Properly invalidate cache for multiple Varnish nodes. This session requires some basic understanding of Docker and Kubernetes; however, I will provide some intro if you are new to it. Join this session and enjoy!

Slides from Docker Los Angeles meetup on 4/18/2018. Most of us have used Docker to ship application code from a laptop or a continuous integration system to a production server. But why stop there? In this talk, we will discuss some little known and less commonly understood ways to use Docker to increase portability of everything else. For example, Docker can be used as a portable apt repository to install packages on any server, not only in a container. Another example is to use Docker (and LinuxKit) as a way to distribute Docker images when a registry isn’t available. *About the Speaker:* Dex Horthy, is a Core Engineer at Replicated. He has spent the last year designing and writing production grade enterprise software for the Replicated platform, including container orchestration runtimes and custom integrations into the Kubernetes and Docker APIs.

In a world of beautiful graphical user interfaces (GUI), it can be easy to forget (or ignore) the comparatively ugly and boring command line. However, for those of us who have been doing web development for many years, it is often still our go-to place to get things done quickly without the distraction that a dedicated application sometimes provides. With a little bit of tweaking, the command line can actually look pretty too, while at the same time providing useful information. In this webinar, Dave Myburgh, senior engineer at Acquia, and team lead on acquia.com, will discuss useful ways to get things done faster by using the command line in Drupal web development. Attendees will walk away from this webinar with a deeper understanding of: -Using Git via the command line along with the aid of some visual tweaks -Managing Drupal sites with drush -Using SASS and Compass in your themes -Several small command line tweaks and commands to optimize development

As Puppet pushes into it’s second decade of reign, there are several organisations out there that have been using Puppet for a long time. Sometimes, even since the beginning! With the EOL announcement Puppet 3.X release, we’ve had a number of customers approach us to help with their upgrade. Normally the upgrade itself is fairly, it’s the code base that gives the biggest challenge, especially those with over 3 years of organic growth. So let’s spread the word of common anti-patterns and issues that can come back to bite you We’ll be talking about how Hiera is both the best and worst thing to happen to Puppet, marvel at how people were happily running 0.2 Puppet in production and what hacky solutions that seemed good at the time will come back to bite you! By the end of this, you’ll hopefully have learnt how to make sure that your Puppet code is defensively coded to to make sure your Puppet code base is healthy for the next decade!

If you work with or at a Telco, Financial Institution or a Government entity, you probably already know about compliance and the various acronyms and headaches it can bring. How can we make this less of a painful process? Well, if you think about it: compliance is a set of rules that someone has given you to enforce and prove that they're being enforced. What is Puppet? A series of rules for systems that need to be enforced. So compliance is the perfect use-case for configuration management.

Join us to discover how to use the PHP frameworks and tools you love in the Cloud with Heroku. We will cover best practices for deploying and scaling your PHP apps and show you how easy it can be. We will show you examples of how to deploy your code from Git and use Composer to manage dependencies during deployment. You will also discover how to maintain parity through all your environments, from development to production. If your apps are database-driven, you can also instantly create a database from the Heroku add-ons and have it automatically attached to your PHP app. Horizontal scalability has always been at the core of PHP application design, and by using Heroku for your PHP apps, you can focus on code features, not infrastructure.

The presentation explores the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) from its inception to its current status in the modern world. The term "artificial intelligence" was first coined by John McCarthy in 1956 to describe efforts to develop computer programs capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. This concept was first introduced at a conference held at Dartmouth College, where programs demonstrated capabilities such as playing chess, proving theorems, and interpreting texts. In the early stages, Alan Turing contributed to the field by defining intelligence as the ability of a being to respond to certain questions intelligently, proposing what is now known as the Turing Test to evaluate the presence of intelligent behavior in machines. As the decades progressed, AI evolved significantly. The 1980s focused on machine learning, teaching computers to learn from data, leading to the development of models that could improve their performance based on their experiences. The 1990s and 2000s saw further advances in algorithms and computational power, which allowed for more sophisticated data analysis techniques, including data mining. By the 2010s, the proliferation of big data and the refinement of deep learning techniques enabled AI to become mainstream. Notable milestones included the success of Google's AlphaGo and advancements in autonomous vehicles by companies like Tesla and Waymo. A major theme of the presentation is the application of generative AI, which has been used for tasks such as natural language text generation, translation, and question answering. Generative AI uses large datasets to train models that can then produce new, coherent pieces of text or other media. The presentation also discusses the ethical implications and the need for regulation in AI, highlighting issues such as privacy, bias, and the potential for misuse. These concerns have prompted calls for comprehensive regulations to ensure the safe and equitable use of AI technologies. Artificial intelligence has also played a significant role in healthcare, particularly highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, where it was used in drug discovery, vaccine development, and analyzing the spread of the virus. The capabilities of AI in healthcare are vast, ranging from medical diagnostics to personalized medicine, demonstrating the technology's potential to revolutionize fields beyond just technical or consumer applications. In conclusion, AI continues to be a rapidly evolving field with significant implications for various aspects of society. The development from theoretical concepts to real-world applications illustrates both the potential benefits and the challenges that come with integrating advanced technologies into everyday life. The ongoing discussion about AI ethics and regulation underscores the importance of managing these technologies responsibly to maximize their their benefits while minimizing potential harms.
